This article examines the impact of racism on philosophical reasoning through an exploration of t... more This article examines the impact of racism on philosophical reasoning through an exploration of the thought of Frantz Fanon. How does one respond to forms of reason premised upon the rejection of one’s humanity? Such a challenge leads to melancholia, the author argues, in the face of what he calls disciplinary decadence, which calls for a teleological suspension of philosophy and a philosophical anthropology conducive to metacritical and open conception of a human being.

This article outlines the concept of blackness as that which resists completeness and therefore i... more This article outlines the concept of blackness as that which resists completeness and therefore is the paradoxical exemplification of thought at meta-levels--that is, thought about thought. Distinguishing reason from rationality, where the former is broader than the latter, the author argues that this is a central feature of Africana and black (treated as paradoxical and oxymoronic) thought. This course requires articulating how disciplinary decadence has affected thinking and how teleological suspensions (going beyond decadence) invigorates practices of thought and possibilities for new forms of life.

The paper explores questions of enslavement and freedom through challenges of philosophical anthropology, philosophy of social change, and metacritical reflections posed by African Diasporic or Africana philosophy. Such challenges include the relevance and legitimacy of philosophical reflection to the lives of racialized slaves and concludes with a discussion of the implications of the analysis for an understanding of the "face" of political life and the importance of the concept of "home" for a cogent theory of freedom.

After situating African-American religious thought as a branch of Africana thought, the author examines these two religious thinkers' work as an effort to forge a position on African-American religious thought-including its relation to theology-in an age where even theory is treated as a god that is about to die. At the conclusion, secularism emerges as a religious project that normatively undergirds the methodological dimensions of these works.
