The central theme of the book is how a group of Western-trained Vietnamese teachers of English shape, reshape, negotiate and appropriate their multiple identities in relation to their roles and selves in the context of teaching English as an international language. Phan explores this process of identity formation through a study based on in-depth interviews, group focus interviews, guided reflective writings and other informal communications.

In view of the difficulties of non-contact high-precision measurement of the planar motion objects, an innovative measuring method is proposed which is based on the combined using of high-precision laser distance sensors. This paper presents the structure of the new sensor and its measuring principle, and established a mathematical model of the measurement object and its error model by using differential method. We use the Monte Carlo method to random sample the random sampling of random variables of the error model; finally combining with the instance; we use the Monte Carlo method to get frequency distribution histogram of the measurement error. Through analysis and calculation of this paper, we prepare for theory for the practical application of this new type of sensor.

As the ageing population in Vietnam continues to increase, understanding important dimensions of QoL for the elderly is essential. There is a paucity of research in this area, however, and the available literature focuses on functional capacities. The purpose of this article is to explore perceptions on the dimensions of QoL among the elderly in Vietnam, to use these perceptions to broaden the concept, and to explore similarities and differences between those living in urban compared to rural areas. Method: Qualitative methods included in-depth interviews (IDI) with experts in ageing and elderly persons, as well as focus group discussions (FGDs) in three communes in Hai Duong province. IDIs and FGDs were recorded and transcribed. NVivo software was used to analyse the data. Results: Thematic analysis identified physical, psychological, social, environmental, religious, and economic as important dimensions of QoL. For elderly participants in both urban and rural areas, physical health, social relations, finances and economics, the physical and social environment, and psychological health were reported as important. Rural participants also identified religious practice as an important dimension of QoL. In terms of relationships, the elderly in urban areas prioritised those with their children, while the elderly in rural areas focussed their concerns on community relationships and economic conditions. Conclusion: Isolating individual factors that contribute to QoL among the elderly is difficult given the interrelations and rich cross-linkages between themes. Elderly participants in urban and rural areas broadly shared perspectives on the themes identified, in particular social relationships, but their experiences diverged around issues surrounding finances and economics, their respective physical and social environments, and the contribution of religious practice. The study findings may help provide guidance for the development of a socially and culturally relevant instrument for measuring QoL among the elderly in Vietnam. The results will also be useful for developing policies and interventions that are responsive to the needs of the elderly, and reflect the themes perceived to be important.

Cells of strain Phe91T were slightly curved rods with single polar flagella. Optimum growth was observed at pH 7.0 and 30 °C. The novel strain utilized elemental sulfur, thiosulfate, sulfite, dithionite, arsenate, nitrate and DMSO as electron acceptors with lactate as an energy and carbon source, but nitrite was not utilized. Microaerophilic growth was also observed. Fumarate, pyruvate, lactate, malate, succinate, hydrogen (with acetate as a carbon source) and formate (with acetate) could serve as electron donors. Fumarate, pyruvate and malate were fermented. The DNA G+C content was 42.7 mol%. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence phylogeny, strain Phe91T was affiliated with the genus Sulfurospirillum in the class Epsilonproteobacteria and was most closely related to Sulfurospiri...

The achievements of the system during the past decades have indeed been impressive, but the changing economic situation in Vietnam has consequences for all public sector activities, including health care. Liberalization of economic policies has encouraged private medical practice and free trade in medicines and drugs, while financial support for the state health system is decreasing. Equity has always been an important goal for the vietnamese health system, but it becomes harder and harder to realize under the new conditions of financing. The restrictions in centralized planning and funding brought about by recent changes also reveal weak points in the system, from planning to training to management at the different levels. This situation is discussed and issues concerning policy, legislation and human resources are highlighted in terms of their effect on equity.

Cr(VI) induces a broad spectrum of DNA damage, but Cr(VI)-induced DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) have not been reported. Previously we found that Cr(VI) activates the ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) kinase. ATM is activated specifically in response to DSBs. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate DSB induction by Cr(VI) exposure with the overarching hypothesis that S phase-dependent DSBs are produced by Cr(VI) exposure. To test this hypothesis, normal human fibroblasts were treated with either Cr(VI) or neocarzinostatin (NCS). DSBs were analyzed by both comet assay under neutral conditions, which detects primarily DNA DSBs, and phosphorylation of histone H2AX (g-H2AX) and the resultant formation of nuclear foci, which are considered to be indicative of DSBs. Induction of DSBs was observed after Cr(VI) exposure, however, the Cr(VI)-induced DSBs were abrogated by G 1 synchronization. Furthermore, our data showed that Cr(VI)-induced DSBs were only observed in the S phase population, whereas no significant DSBs were observed in Cr(VI)-treated G 1 synchronized cells. In contrast, NCS-induced DSBs were equally distributed in all cell cycle phases in both asynchronous and G 1 synchronized cells. Moreover, Cr(VI)-induced g-H2AX foci formation was restricted to PCNA-positive cells, whereas NCSinduced g-H2AX foci formed in both PCNA-positive and PCNA-negative cells. These results indicate that Cr(VI)induced DSBs are S phase-dependent. Finally, our data showed that Cr(VI)-induced g-H2AX production was significantly decreased in ATM À=À cells compared with ATM þ=þ cells. Taken together, these results suggest that Cr(VI)-induced activation of ATM involves the formation of S phase-dependent DSBs. Examining the mechanism of Cr(VI)-induced DSBs will aid in understanding the interrelated mechanisms of Cr(VI) toxicity and carcinogenesis.

By analyzing the sheet cutting process, a three-dimensional and five-axis laser scribing robot is developed, which is based on surface matching. This robot can acquire the data of the workpiece surface automatically through the non-contact measurement. The date model can be generated by computer. The matching method is based on curvature and arc length of feature points. By matching data model and ideal model, robot can choose the optimal trajectory for laser cutting. From experimental results, the robot is designed rationally. It can make the scribing path closest to the ideal track and has extensive utility value.
