Our Fatherland in its geographical, historical, tribal, economic and everyday significance (1879/1881–1901), which was the first and only example of its time of a detailed and comprehensive description of Russia in a popular scientific form, but with strict reliance on scientific literature. The initiator and first publisher was M. O. Wolf, one of the most successful book publishers and booksellers in Russia. Many prominent representatives of science and culture took part in the preparation of the 19-volume edition. Particularly significant amongst them were N. I. Kostomarov, I. E. Zabelin, D. I. Ilovaisky, P. A. Kulish, and V. V. Chuiko. The editor-in-chief of the publication was P. P. Semenov (from 1906, P. P. Semenov-Tyan-Shansky). Volumes of Picturesque Russia consisted of essays devoted to all regions of the Russian Empire and were mainly of an ethnographic, geographical, and statistical nature. The importance of the volumes about the Kingdom of Poland is that they contain historical information to a greater extent than other volumes of the publication. From the point of view of the stated topic, essays of particular interest are those of author V. V. Chuiko focusing on the periods of Polish history before, during, and after the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The essays on state and political history allows us to analyse, from the point of view of the authors, their place and role in the context of Russian historical Polonistics and the Polish question. In addition, the work was an attempt to construct imperial identity, which was supposed to supersede – or replace – national identity in the modern history of the Russian Empire. The author of the article comes to the conclusion that Picturesque Russia, especially the Polish historical essays, is fertile material, the content of which it is advisable to analyse from the point of view of widespread (or just emerging) technologies of power in the empire.

The author considers one of the central subjects of the essay, which is connected with the plans of the Emperor Constantine for the foundation of New Rome and the spread of Christianity. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the reconstruction of the historical picture in the essay, the characteristics of the diverse tasks that Brodsky set for himself, as well as to the stylistic features of the essay text. The article shows that the ideological subtext, to which literary critics and colleagues in the pen often attached excessive importance, plays a rather secondary role in this habitual journey into the past for Brodsky, not to mention that the circumstance of his private life acts as an incentive for such an essay. While the idea of Constantine as emperor and the idea of Constantinople as the New Rome, which marks the idea of Christianity, comes to the fore.

The multi-genre creative heritage of Szujski represents fertile material in terms of determining whether it is generally valid to speak about images of power in relation to complex, multi-genre samples: historical works, dramaturgical works, journalism, and even satire. Among other questions which arise in the context of the stated theme are, “How meaningful and emotionally saturated is the image depending on the genre?” and “Can we say that the use of the category of the image guarantees a more adequate picture of the past and present created by the author?”. The conducted study convinces us that, as a rule, our author rem...

Special attention is paid to the peculiarities of the formation and development of Russian historical Polonistics, which made it possible to clarify its previously accepted periodisation. This article notes the interdependence between the Polish question and Polonistic studies, which is characteristic of Russia in the 19th century, but only recently reflected in modern historiography. The author of the article suggests considering Russian historical Polonistics as the experience of Russian-Polish dialogue in the context of the long 19th century.

The collective portrait of Warsaw governors general, which was created by the author of the monograph, deserves special attention, given that the imperial elites of the Vistula Land have not previously been the subject of special research. Of no small importance is the fact that the observation over the complex process of transformation of the Congress Kingdom of Poland into the Vistula Land allows the author to comprehensively consider, as he puts it, the “contact zones and conflict nodes” that stood out most clearly against the background of the existing administrative structures.
