Particularly, we consider the problem of manipulating a grasped object using external pushes for which the pusher sticks to the object. Given the physical properties of the object, frictional coefficients at contacts and a desired regrasp on the object, we propose a sampling-based planning framework that builds a pushing strategy concatenating different feasible stable pushes to achieve the desired regrasp. An efficient dynamics formulation allows us to plan in-hand manipulations 100-1000 times faster than our previous work which builds upon a complementarity formulation. Experimental observations for the generated plans show that the object precisely moves in the grasp as expected by the planner. Video Summary-youtu.be/qOTKRJMx6Ho

The feasible application of a tool, such as pulling a nail with a hammer claw, requires careful coordination of the choice of grasp and joint trajectories to ensure kinematic and force limits are not exceededin the grasp as well as the robot mechanism. In this thesis, we formulate this type of problem as choosing the values of decision variables in the presence of various constraints. We evaluate the impact of the various constraints in some representative instances of tool use. To aid others in further investigating this class of problems, we have released materials such as printable tool models and experimental data. We hope that these can serve as the basis of a benchmark problem for investigating tasks that involve many kinematic, actuation, friction, and environment constraints.

The robot must choose a sequence of discrete actions, or strategy, such as whether to pick up an object, and the continuous parameters of each of those actions, such as how to grasp that object. In forceful manipulation tasks, the force requirements substantially impact the choices of both strategy and parameters. To enable planning and executing forceful manipulation, we augment an existing task and motion planner with controllers that exert wrenches and constraints that explicitly consider torque and frictional limits. In two domains, opening a childproof bottle and twisting a nut, we demonstrate how the system considers a combinatorial number of strategies and how choosing actions that are robust to parameter variations impacts the choice of strategy. https://mcube.mit.edu/forceful-manipulation/

Our goal was to screen several species from the rain forest of Costa Rica looking for new antitumor molecules. Mushroom extracts were screened using two human cell lines: A549 (lung adenocarcinoma) and NL20 (immortalized normal lung epithelium). Extracts able to kill tumor cells while preserving nontumor cells were considered “anticancer”. The mushroom with better properties was Macrocybe titans. Positive extracts were fractionated further and tested for biological activity on the cell lines. The chemical structure of the active compound was partially elucidated through nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and other ancillary techniques. Chemical analysis showed that the active molecule was a triglyceride containing oleic acid, palmitic acid, and a more complex fatty acid with 2 double bonds. Synthesis of all possible triglycerides and biological testing identified the natural compound, which was named Macrocybin. ...

Mammography has proven to be the most effective method for the early detection of this type of cancer. Mammographic images are sometimes difficult to understand, due to the nature of the anomalies, the low contrast image and the composition of the mammary tissues, as well as various technological factors such as spatial resolution of the image or noise. Computer-aided diagnostic systems have been developed to increase the accuracy of mammographic examinations and be used by physicians as a second opinion in obtaining the final diagnosis, and thus reduce human errors. Convolutional neural networks are a current trend in computer vision tasks, due to the great performance they have achieved. The present investigation was based on this type of networks to classify into three classes, normal, benign and malignant tumour. Due to the fact that the miniMIAS database used has a low number of images, the transfer learning technique was applied t...

Throwing has the potential to increase the physical reachability and picking speed of a robot arm. However, precisely throwing arbitrary objects in unstructured settings presents many challenges: from acquiring objects in grasps suitable for reliable throwing, to handling varying object-centric properties (e.g., mass distribution, friction, shape) and complex aerodynamics. In this work, we propose an end-to-end formulation that jointly learns to infer control parameters for grasping and throwing motion primitives from visual observations (RGB-D images of arbitrary objects in a bin) through trial and error. Within this formulation, we investigate the synergies between grasping and throwing (i.e., learning grasps that enable more accurate throws) and between simulation and deep learning (i.e., using deep networks to predict residuals on top of control parameters predicted by a physics simulator). The resulting system, TossingBot, is able to grasp and successfully throw arbitrary objects into boxes located outside its maximum reach range at 500+ mean picks per hour (600+ grasps per hour with 85% throwing accuracy); and generalizes to new objects and target locations.

First, we would like to congratulate the authors for the selected case. However, we believe that the reading of the electrocardiographic tracing might be improved. The authors comment that the ST-segment elevation in V1 and V2 initially suggests ischemia in the left anterior descending artery proximal to the first septal or first diagonal, but this is not true because there is no mirror image in the inferior leads. 2 In case of occlusion of the right coronary artery (RCA) proximal to the branches of the right ventricle, sometimes, if the RCA is very short and does not affect the right ventricle, 2,3 it is possible to observe the elevation of the ST segment from V1 to V3 through V4, but the elevation in V1 is greater than that observed in V3 and V4 (V1>V3-V4) without Q wave appearance (4.5) or V2≥V3 3 or ST-segment elevation in V4R greater that the ST segment elevation in V1 to V4, 5 contrary to what happened in case of occlusion of the left anterior descending artery distal to S1 and D1. On the other hand, in some cases, an elevation of the ST segment is observed in V1 to V3, which may even be more striking than in the inferior leads. This occurs rarely in those cases of occlusion of the RCA proximal to the branches of the right ventricle or when the RCA is very short 3 or by occlusion of the conus branch of the RCA. As the authors mentioned, it is important to recognize right ventricular myocardial infarction in the ECG. Careful observation of ST-segment deviations can provide important tips concerning the location of the affected artery, the site of occlusion, the coronary line, and the area of myocardium at risk.

The implication or association of physiological rhythms with peak activity at a certain time of day or night might be suspected, given that the onset of cardiovascular accidents follows a circadian pattern. 2 Several studies suggest that increased cardiovascular mortality in winter might be related to alterations in the biological clock controlled by the suprachiasmatic nucleus. This is regulated by day-night alternations, that is, by light-dark cycles. 3,4 Other functions such as cortisol secretion, 5 blood pressure variations, 6 and vasomotor tone 9 also depend on these rhythms. Our group has shown that interleukin 6 follows a lightdark cycle in patients with acute myocardial infarction. 8 These variations can be attributed to the centrally controlled release of this compound by the neuroendocrine system. Such control would be exercised through synthesis and release of melatonin by the pineal gland, which, in turn, is regulated by light-dark variations. 9 Although the study of the light-dark variations in proinflammatory cytokines in itself lacks clinical relevance, these findings point the way to new lines of investigation in the field of biological rhythms in humans. More studies will be needed to help clarify the mechanisms that underlie the cyclic nature of the presentation of some acute coronary syndromes. Such knowledge will undoubtedly lead to therapeutic interventions that provide better protection at times of greatest risk.

The concentration of certain proinflammatory cytokines has been found to be elevated in patients ... more The concentration of certain proinflammatory cytokines has been found to be elevated in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Many studies have shown that coronary ischemic accidents do not show a uniform distribution throughout the day, but instead exhibit rhythmic variations. The objective of this study is to determine whether there is a circadian pattern of variation in the concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines in patients with acute myocardial infarction. The sample included 40 patients with acute myocardial infarction and 40 controls. Levels of interleukin 6 and 1 beta were determined in the first 24 hours after the acute coronary ischemic episode. Blood samples were extracted at 3:00 a.m. (period of darkness) and at 10:00 a.m. (period of daylight). Both groups were similar in age, sex distribution, and coronary risk factors. Interleukin 6 levels showed a significant variation between daylight and nighttime concentrations in patients with acute myocardial infarction and ...
