The background around the target may change the correlation peak value and can lead to false alarms. In this paper phase encoded input scenes with non-overlapping uniform background have been analyzed. The phase-only filter matched to a phase encoded target and the phase version of a minimum-mean-square-error filter, have been applied during the recognition procedure. Digital and optical results obtained for various input scenes have shown that in the case of a high level of non- overlapping input background the introduction of phase encoding scenes can significantly improve the recognition results.

The phase-only filter, the inverse filter and the minimum variance - minimum average correlation energy filter are considered. Numerical and optical results of the recognition are presented.

We demonstrate a better diffraction efficiency and a greater discrimination capability for the setup with phase encoded scenes. We report the limited intensity invariance characteristic of the new arrangement. Numerical and optical recognition results are shown.

We show that in the case of phase encoded objects the filter provides better discrimination capability. The correlation peak value obtained with the new filter is less sensitive to errors in noise statistics parameter estimations used to calculate the filter.

The pattern recognition based on the comparison of Fourier transforms of the target and the scene... more The pattern recognition based on the comparison of Fourier transforms of the target and the scene was adopted to identify occluded objects [ 1]. A method based on the filter frequency selection was used. Here, we will show that by the simple phase encoding of the input scene the recognition results can be still improved.
