However, when a large number of tiny data blocks are transferred over the Internet conventionally, some critical problems such as large overheads for legacy protocols and their processing power for communication equipment are highlighted. To solve these problems, MQTT has been discussed actively in academic societies and standardization organizations. However, it is not reasonable to use the MQTT to transfer large files, e.g., video files from surveillance footage. This paper proposes new mechanisms for cooperation between MQTT and FTP for data blocks of any size. This paper also reports the reasonability of this mechanism through prototyping.

In IoT services, vast amounts of data are often aggregated from tiny amounts of data generated from a large number of end devices. Therefore, if an IoT service is adopted in the current network infrastructures, a significant overhead is inevitable, such as through activities including name resolution using DNS in IP. In addition, as the header size in HTTP packets is relatively large, the load on the network further increases. To solve these problems, Information Centric networking (ICN) is being widely studied. Unlike the IP, the ICN aims to reduce the load on the network and shorten the data access time from the clients by distributing the data. In this study, we examined the mechanism of data linkage by using the following: (i) the MQ telemetry transport (MQTT) included in the ICN and (ii) shared memory blocks in the interworking points. From the experimental results obtained, we confirm that the clients in the proposed network configuration can acquire data with a uniform data access time independent of the number of interworking points.

In the IoT services, a huge number of small packets are transferred across the networks. If the current Internet technologies are applied to these services, a large overhead is caused by the IP routing process, information discovery, and large protocol headers, such as HTTP over TCP. In addressing this problem, the application of Information Centric Network (ICN) technologies to the IoT services holds promise. However, this has a disadvantage in that a network based on the ICN technologies is expanded to a larger area. This study proposes a solution to this problem through a framework of a distributed ICN system for the IoT services. In the proposed approach, the end points are invoked by the ICN related protocols. Interworking points are invoked to connect among themselves by a logical loop and cached information is transferred in real time through “shared memory architecture”. This study also presents the detailed operations based on this approach.

The Fed4IoT project aims to develop an IoT virtualization technology to realize a smart-city application that federates heterogeneous IoT services. In this project, wildlife monitoring was chosen as an example of the application. Wildlife damage is not only an agricultural problem but also is disturbing the daily lives of people who live in rural areas. It has been a universal problem for a long time. In this use case, an IoT platform with end devices that consist of a cage, camera, target counter, etc. is employed, and local offices and residents are informed of an animal's approach, the condition of the cage, etc. through an information-centric network. The obtained data are used in other Fed4IoT services. In this work, the IoT platform and its application to wildlife monitoring are discussed. Moreover, this study and the project aim to help in the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals© (17 goals and 169 targets to eradicate poverty and realize a sustainable world).

Additionally, crop damage caused by animals is a common occurrence all over the world. An example of such damage is the damage to agricultural crops and threat to elderly people owing to animals in Hakusan city, Ishikawa prefecture, where the Hakusan campus of the authors' university is located. Presently, measures against damage caused by animals are being implemented by installing animal traps and cages; however, it is necessary to patrol the conditions of capture, thereby increasing human effort. To solve this problem, the authors considered a wildlife monitoring system to remotely manage a cage by using a sensor or camera with Internet connectivity. Assuming that a large number of IoT devices would be used in such a system, the authors visualize a high network load problem. Therefore, the authors aim to reduce the load on the IoT network. In this paper, the part of the wildlife-monitoring system that is concerned the evaluation and consideration of network using MQTT is described.

It is an important issue to study on transfer data blocks efficiently. Content-Centric Networking (CCN) is applied to solve this problem. However, CCN shall be modified to support unidirectional communication as status reports from end devices. In this study, we propose the new mechanism based on the piggy-back approach for this purpose. CCN has specified a pair of messages to transfer data blocks across networks, i.e., “Interest” to request data blocks and “Data” containing these blocks themselves. In the proposed mechanism, transferred data blocks are contained in Interest and Data can be omitted. We compare some mechanisms including the proposed mechanism, the legacy mechanism using HTTP on the Internet, and the conventional mechanism using CCN. In one of the conventional mechanisms using CCN, to align CCN message sequences, the dummy Interest is created from the se...

In most of these IoT services, a significant number of tiny data blocks are transferred across wide-area networks. Therefore, the transfer mechanisms should be simplified. One promising candidate for use as a transfer mechanism is MQ Telemetry Transport (MQTT). In this paper, an architecture for a distributed MQTT broker, referred to as a virtual ring approach, is proposed. This architecture complies with the IoT Data Exchange Platform, as discussed in ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 41. The operations of this distributed broker architecture using a virtual ring network for real-time communication is also described, along with the superiority of the architecture based on a performance analysis using queuing models

However, its requirements changed with improvements in network technologies, and they can be divided into four phases. With increasing development of Internet of Things (IoT), internet services have become more diverse in recent years. Therefore, requirements of gateways, for their application to IoT, have also changed. The requirements of a phase 5 Gateway are open connectivity and capability to cooperate with multiple cloud services. In this study, a wildlife monitoring system, which is a use case in the FED4IoT project, was chosen in the development of the Phase 5 Gateway. A data model was created to make the gateway learn the type of data obtained at the gateway. Finally, a phase 5 Gateway to be applied to the wildlife monitoring system was developed.

This paper describes the virtual MAC address scheme on Mobile Ethernet and gives qualitative comparison of Mobile Ethernet architecture with other mobility supports. For a quantitative analysis, we give an analytical network model through a Markovian model. And, many studies have analyzed routing effectiveness for wireless multi-hop networks and/or mobile ad-hoc networks under conditions that continuous communication and point-to-point traffic flows between nodes inside the network are assumed. On the other hand, our targeted WSNs for data monitoring have some different assumptions such as traffic patterns on data monitoring, restrictive packet existing periods, and network consisting sensor nodes with constrained capabilities. For evaluation of network stability, not only average loss rates are important, but also distributions are relevant, because high loss rates on temporal wireless links would make impossible to ensure reliable management of the targeted application. So, in order to evaluate stability of those networks, novel evaluation metrics are required. In this paper, we address stability of the WSN for data monitoring, propose a mechanism to improve the equitableness of the routes to the central node as the advanced local route reeselection procedure, and evaluate the proposed mechanism by a conditional data delivery ratio with wireless failure.
