This research was conducted in the mangrove area of Mandalle Village, Pangkep Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The objective of this research was to compare the survival, growth, and biochemical composition of the mangrove crab (Scylla olivacea) maintained by a silvofishery system that was stocked with the different lunar phases. The research container used a fixed cage made of bamboo in a circular shape with a diameter of 2.25 m. The test animals used were mangrove crabs (S. olivacea) weighing 150-160 g from collectors in Pallime Village, Cenrana District, Bone Regency, South Sulawesi and reared for 30 days. The study consisted of 4 treatments with 3 replications each. The four types of treatment are differences in the beginning of the different phases of the moon, namely: new moon, quarter, full moon, and three quarters. The research data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis analysis and the Mann Withney U test. The results of the Kruskal-Wallis analysis showed that the difference in the moon phase had no significant effect (p> 0.05) on survival, but had a significant (p <0.05) effect on survival. growth and body biochemical composition of mangrove crabs (S. olivacea). The best growth and biochemical composition of crab bodies are produced during the new moon phase.

Manipulative experiment utilizing artificial seagrass units (ASUs) was done to examine the effect of factors related to fragmentation of seagrasses on abundance, diversity and composition of epifauna associated with seagrass. The experiment was conducted at Killarney Vale, Tuggerah Lakes, New South Wales to investigate the effects of distance from the source of colonizers, differences between the edge and middle areas of the patches and differences between artificial and natural seagrass. The results of the experiment showed that the distance from natural seagrass beds was an important factor for amphipods abundances and position within a patch (edge versus middle) was important for tanaids group, but not for other groups. There was no significant difference between artificial and natural seagrass beds in abundance of epifauna indicating that ASUs represent an adequate substitute for natural seagrasses for experimental purposes. In general, the study demonstrated that the effects of various factors related to fragmentation of seagrass beds have different effects on different groups of organisms.

Population of dugong tends to decrease in all of its range as an impact from hunting, fishing activities and habitat degradation. In South Sulawesi-Indonesia, recent information about dugong population is unknown due to limited observation. Last dugong existence reported from Barranglompo Island in 1991. This research aim to reveal the existence of dugong in Spermonde Archipelago. Result of this study showed from 1992 to 2017, only 6 individu of dugong were observed. In 2006, one live dugong accidentally found roaming near Samalona Island. This encounter was successfully recorded by video camera. Four years later, one dead dugong found trapped in fishing net near Lantangpeo village, Tanakeke Island and sold to local fishermen for consumed. In 2014, one dugong grazing track was also found in Tanakeke Island near Balandatu Village. Information from 2016, reported two dugongs in seagrass meadow around Punton...

Satellites have become useful tools for tasks such as characterization, monitoring, and the continuous prospecting of natural resources. This research aims to analyze spatial dynamic and destructive on coral reefs area and correlation between live coral reduction and population on small islands. Landsat MSS, TM, ETM, and OLI-TIRS are used to spatial analyze of coral reef dynamics from 1972 to 2016. The image processing includes gap-filling, atmospheric correction, geometric correction, image composite (true color), water column correction, unsupervised classification, reclassification, accuracy assessment. The statistical analysis identifies the relationship between dynamic population data with a reduction of live coral, namely Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Multiple Regression Analysis. The effect of the population shows a positive correlation wit...

This study aimed to determine DSi concentration seasonally in waters of the western coast of South Sulawesi in relation to coastal water quality indicator. Water, chlorophyll-a, and diatom samples were collected from the coastal areas of the Tallo-Makassar, Maros, and Pangkep, in April 2013 (transitional season), June 2013 (dry season), and February 2014 (wet season). Factorial analysis of variance was used to identify significant seasonal and temporal variations, and linear regression was used to test the relationship of chlorophyll-a and diatom abundance to DSi concentrations. The results showed that the DSi concentration was higher in the wet season of 35.2-85.2 µM than in the other seasons (transitional season: 10.8-68.4 µM, dry season: 9.59-24.1 µM). The abundance of diatoms during the transitional season reached ~9.7x10 7 cell/m 3 in the Pangkep river, 2.3x10 7 cell/m 3...
