In the first part of the article, the genesis of Rodari’s book is recounted along with the reasons for its popularity with children. Subsequently, the article outlines the history of the adaptations of Tale of Cipollino in the USSR, which were not limited to literary rewritings, but also saw Rodari’s work transposed onto films and a ballet. Lastly, the article presents an analysis of the Soviet film productions with Cipollino as the protagonist: the animated film Rovno v 3:15 (At 3:15 Sharp) (Dezhkin and Migunov 1959), a feature animation (Chipollino, ) and a filmstrip (Chipollino, ).

The research conducted so far has shown that Sienkiewicz's novel was part of Italian publications for a young readership as early as at the beginning of the 20 th century, and that the book was frequently republished and reedited by numerous publishing houses over the following decades. The paper aims to present the strategies applied by Italian publishers as they recast Sienkiewicz's work into versions specifically targeting young readers. Sienkiewicz's Roman narrative proved a source of easy revenue for many publishing houses. Discreditable translatory practices were, at least at the beginning of the 20 th century, mainly the domain of Milanese publishers whose efforts also focused on reworkings of Quo Vadis for children and young adults after the Second World War. The paper discusses examples that vividly illustrate the commercialisation of literature and publishers' responses to the changes of the Italian publishing market in the second half of the 20 th century. The findings of a study that used quantitative methods to analyse the corpus of 18 Italian editions of Quo Vadis are presented as well.

The first part of this paper outlines the history of the popularity of Quo Vadis by focusing on the operations of Milanese publishers that made the Polish novel part of their offer in a variety of ways (as translations, adaptations, reworkings, plagiarisms, etc.). Bibliometric methods are used to establish why so many publishing houses decided to publish Henryk Sienkiewicz's Roman romance. The analysis of the bibliometric data of the published translations helped assess and describe the extent and the character of the popularity that the novel garnered among Milanese publishers. The second part of the paper relates the findings of a multi-method quantitative study of the same material. The number of word tokens was compared between the original and the translations. The lexical richness across the texts under study was compared by means of the moving average type-token ratio (MATTR). Sentence lengths were also compared, as was sentence length distribution as time series. Two different programmes (WCopyFind and Tracer) yielded very similar results on the degree of the similarity of five-word phrases in pairs of translations, which was determined in network analysis.

In my argument, I draw on the ethnographic approach, using a common ethnographic tool: the qualitative interview (structured interview) to address important moments and events in Ernst's life. The focus on the life-story of one translator will help me depict the environment she lived and worked in as well as identify her embedment in particular familial and professional settings which crucially affected her work. I will also discuss Ernst's formative contribution to the image of Italian literature in Poland in the years 1953-1979, i.e. in the period of her translation activity.

Drawing on D'hulst's historiographic model (2001, 2010) and Kaczmarek's topobiographical approach (2013), I address key moments in Ernst's life. The focus on the life story of this one translator helps me outline the milieu in which she lived and worked as well as show her impact on how the representations of Italian literature took shape in Poland before 1994. I also explore translations of Italian literature for children and young adults that Zofia Ernst produced for the Polish publisher Nasza Księgarnia during the period of 1954-1974, as they still form an under-examined field.

Drawing on Itamar Even-Zohar's theory of culture repertoire, we posit that in the 1990s, the cultural repertoire of Polish children's literature was distinctly limited, while the development of the Lilliputian publishers in the next decade was a reaction against that limitation. We believe that the role played by the Lilliputian publishers in Polish children's literature is best captured by the notion of idea-makers, i.e. people who are a driving force of change in culture repertoire. The aim of this descriptive exploratory paper is to identify and analyse Polish and foreign books released by those publishers and to define distinctive features of those publications with a special focus on literary imports from France and Italy. Our findings imply that the choices made by the Lilliputian publishers have modified the repertoire available to Polish readers of children's literature at the turn of the millennia.

As shown in previous studies, these ‘Lilliputian publishers’ were important initiators of change in the cultural repertoire of children's books available in Poland at the turn of the millennium. The change they initiated is closely related to the fact that translations account for two-thirds of their output. Drawing on interviews and a case study of children's literature imported from France, the research reported in this article identifies and analyses the criteria and mechanisms of book selection for translation with a view to expanding understanding of the role of publishers in the literary translation event and their interactions with other actors in this process. The article explores also the impact of the studied publishers' literary imports on children's literature in Poland and, more generally, the role of the small, independent publis...
