Dr. Kamrul Hassan secured the first class first position (thesis group) in the M.Sc. final exam. of 1989, (held in 1992-93) from the Department of Zoology (Major: Wildlife Biology and Management), University of Dhaka. After awarding the degree, he joined the Bangladesh Forest Department as ‘Assistant Conservator of Forests’ in October 1994 and served his jobs in different units of the department till to the end of July 2017. He obtained higher education in the field of forestry and related sciences from several world reputed institutions. He received a Post‐Graduate Diploma in ‘Wildlife Management and Ecodevelopment’ from Wildlife Institute of India

An assessment of side-stream generation from Finnish forest industry

This study examined side-stream generation from Finnish forest industry comprising data from 19 s... more This study examined side-stream generation from Finnish forest industry comprising data from 19 sawmills, 1 plywood mill, 1 particleboard mill, 10 paper and board mills, 1 semi-mechanical mill, and 15 chemical pulp mills. A structured questionnaire survey was carried out for this study. The results revealed that the generation of side stream in sawmills, plywood mills, paper and board mills, mechanical pulp mills, and chemical pulp mills accounted for 42.2%, 56.1%, 23.8%, 30.7%, and 56% of round wood log input, respectively, and 91.2%, 135.5%, 42.2%, 44.7%, and 238.5% of the finished product, respectively. Woodchips, sawdust, and bark were recognized as the significant side streams in sawmills and plywood mills, whereas fiber sludge was found the main side stream in paper, board and mechanical pulp mills. In chemical pulp mills, black liquor was found the greatest side stream, which comprises 43% of the wood input and 183.3% of the finished product. The study estimated that in 2016, Finnish forest industry generated a total 27.7 million tons of side streams, consisting of 49.2% black liquor, 28.5% solid wood-based waste, 14.1% sludge, 4.4% ashes, and 3.8% others. A current use of these side streams and their future utilization potential is also discussed.

India is one of the largest land mass countries in the world and amply bestowed with biomass resources. Investigations on biomass supply potential, socioeconomic challenges, local people attitudes, current bioenergy markets, and technologies are prerequisite while seeking to develop sustainable energy plants. The study aimed to assess expert attitudes on woodbased energy development in India. This assessment was based on the opinions of Indian Forest Service (IFS) officers who are involved in managing wood-based biomass resources in different parts of the country. The study gave emphasis to the advantages, problems, and directions of the biomass based energy development in the country. The results showed that the development of biomass-based energy plants involves a number of challenges both locally and nationally. In addition, the study also highlighted the possible benefits of developing biomass based energy plants at local and national levels. The outcomes of this study provide useful information to the policy decision makers, energy entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders in the development of biomass based energy in India.

Rural households’ preferences and attitudes towards biomass fuels - results from a comprehensive field survey in Bangladesh

Background: Biomass fuel is the main source of rural household energy in many developing countrie... more Background: Biomass fuel is the main source of rural household energy in many developing countries in South and Southeast Asia. This paper examines the preference and attitude towards biomass fuels of consumers living in rural areas of Bangladesh. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect data of 240 households from four upazilas located in four distinct agro-ecological zones of Bangladesh. Different inferential statistical tests were carried out to analyze the information. Results: The results revealed that branches, leaves, cow dung, rice straw and stem wood were the most commonly used biomass fuels, whereas the most preferred biomass fuels were firewood (branches and stem wood) followed by cow dung, bamboo and jute stalk. Due to the short supply of firewood, the rural households opted for inferior types of biomass such as leaves, twigs, rice straw and other crop residues. Samanea saman, Albizia procera and Mangifera indica are the main preferred firewood tree species. The analysis showed that the consumption patterns of and preferences for biomass fuels significantly varied between the regions and the socioeconomic groups. The economic inability of consumers to afford commercial fuels was the main reason for the widespread use of biomass fuels. Nevertheless, the majority of the rural households posed positive attitudes towards an on-farm and off-farm afforestation programme as a response to a future supply of biomass fuel. Conclusions: The study demonstrated that firewood was the most preferred biomass fuel and, as a consequence, the current consumption was not sustainable. Therefore, extensive farming of various fast growing firewood species both in private and public lands has been solicited to bridge the gap between demand and supply.
