Concetta (Ketty) Smedile
Concetta Smedile (also known as Corinne Concetta Smedile Turiaco, or “Ketty”) is an interdisciplinary researcher, pedagogist, philosophy and human sciences teacher, and educator. As a PhD candidate at Córdoba University, her research focuses on anti-Roma racism in Italy.
Her primary research interests span various fields, including racism, prejudice, critical race theory, whiteness studies, post-colonial studies, critical pedagogy, feminism, gender and women’s rights, ethnography, anthropology, mixed-methods research, and psychogenealogy.
Recently, Concetta has implemented innovative school projects aimed at combating gender-based violence. She has also developed courses for parents and students that integrate social science theories with experiential learning through mindfulness techniques.
Previously, Concetta worked as a human rights researcher with the European Roma Rights Centre. Her work centered on women’s issues in Italy, expulsions in France, and evictions in Romania. Notably, she coordinated participatory research and drafted a shadow report for the UN’s CEDAW Committee on the situation of Roma women in Italy. Additionally, Concetta has served as an educator for Roma children in both England and Italy. Her involvement extends to photography projects as well.
