In this study, an experimental setup equipped with multi-pressure sensors was used to measure fluctuating impact pressures on the submerged gate for different flow conditions characterized by the inlet Froude number and submergence factor (S). Time-averaged and instantaneous pressure coefficients are evaluated based on simultaneous measurements of wall pressures at multiple locations, including those at the lip and downstream face of the gate. In particular, instantaneous lift pressure coefficients are observed to be independent of the submergence ratio for S > 0.6. It is found that low Froude number flows produce high surface pressure fluctuations and the dominant frequency of pressure fluctuations shifts to higher frequency as the Froude number increases. Pressure measurements for the free hydraulic jump suggest that the power spectra of lift pressure fluctuations are devoid of any significant energy level, whereas the resulting power spectra of the submerged flow exhibits significant energy level in the frequency range of 14-19 Hz. The proposed measurement system can be used for the in situ identification of hydrodynamic pressures acting on the gates in irrigation canals.

Estimations of genomic heritability, genetic correlations, and phenotypic correlations were implemented for 17 growth and linear type traits of 473 Akkaraman lambs by the univariate and multivariate analysis of animal mixed models. Correspondingly, moderate heritability estimates, as well as high and positive genetic/phenotypic correlations were found between growth and type traits. On the other hand, 2 genome-wide and 19 chromosome-wide significant single nucleotide polymorphisms were found to be associated with the traits as a result of animal mixed model-based genome-wide association analyses. Accordingly, we propose several genes located on different chromosomes (e.g., PRDM2, PTGDR, PTPRG, KCND2, ZNF260, CPE, GRID2, SCD5, SPIDR, ZNF407, HCN3, TMEM50A, FKBP1A, TLE4, SP1, SLC44A1, and MYOM3) as putative quantitative trait loci for the 22 growth and linear type trai...

Moreover, sheep preweaning growth traits as well as in vivo carcass composition traits such as ultrasonic measurements of Longissimus dorsi muscle depth (UMD) and back-fat thickness (UFD) are crucially important indicators of meat yield and hot carcass composition. Despite their relative importance for productivity and profitability of a sheep production system, detected QTL for these traits are quite scarce. Therefore, we implemented GWAS for these traits using animal mixed model-based association approach provided by GenABEL in Esme sheep. Three genome-wide and 14 individual chromosome-wide associated SNPs were discovered. As a result, ESRP1, LOC105613082, ZNF641, DUSP5, TEAD1, SMOX, PTPRT, RALYL, POM121C, PHIP, LOC101106051, ZIM3, PEG3, TRPC7, FBXL4, LOC105610397, LOC105616489 and DNAAF2 were suggested as candidates. Some of the discovered genes and involved pathways were already annotated to contribute growth and development in various species including human, mice and cattle. All in all, the results of this study are expected to strongly contribute to shed a light on the underlying molecular mechanisms behind growth and carcass composition traits, with potential implications on studies aiming faster genetic improvement, targeted low-resolution SNP panel designs and genome-editing studies.

Bu çalışmada, bir deney kanalına yerleştirilen ön yüzü köşeli geniş başlıklı savağın membasındaki farklı istasyonlarda Akustik Doppler Hızölçer ile ölçümler yapılarak akım yapısı araştırılmıştır. Hız ve türbülans gerilmelerinin derinlikle değişimleri incelendiğinde savaktan uzak istasyonlarda tam gelişmiş akım için logaritmik hız dağılımları görülürken, savağa yakın bölgelerde çevrinti etkilerinin akım yapısını önemli miktarda değiştirdiği gözlenmiştir. Yüksek çözünürlükteki fotoğraflar sayısallaştırılarak farklı debiler için savak üzerinden geçen akıma ait su yüzü profilleri elde edilmiştir. Deneysel olarak elde edilen debi-derinlik ilişkileri ile Hall'un teorik sonuçları karşılaştırıldığında, sınır tabaka etkilerinin kuvvet yasasına göre hesaplandığı debi denkleminin hassasiyetinin düşük debide azaldığı görülmüştür. Broad crested weirs (BCW) are widely used hydraulic structures in streams and irrigation canals to control the flow and to measure the discharge. In this study, turbulent flow structure at the upstream of the sharp edged broad crested weir is investigated by means of Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry (ADV) measurements at different stations. Vertical distributions of velocity and turbulence stresses revealed that, while fully developed velocity distributions are observed at stations far from the weir, turbulence effects significantly alter the flow structure as the flow approaches to the weir. High-resolution photographs are digitized to extract water surface profiles of the flow through the weir for different flow rates. Comparison of the experimental results with the theoretical results shows that the accuracy of the theoretical solutions decreases for low flow rates, in which boundary-layer effects are calculated based on the power law.

Nutritional genomics (i.e., nutrigenomics) is the field of research that is interested in all types of reciprocal interactions between nutrients and the genomes of organisms, i.e., variable patterns of gene expression and effect of genetic variations on the nutritional environment. Devising a revolutionary analytical approach to the traditional ruminant nutrition research, the relatively novel area of ruminant nutrigenomics has several studies concerning different aspects of animal production systems. This paper aims to review the current nutrigenomics research in the frame of how nutrition of ruminants can be modified accounting for individual genetic backgrounds and gene/diet relationships behind productivity, quality, efficiency, disease resistance, fertility, and greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, current challenges facing ruminan...

Conventional designs of chlorine contact tanks in potable water treatment plants are insufficient... more Conventional designs of chlorine contact tanks in potable water treatment plants are insufficient in terms of disinfection efficiency due to low hydraulic and mixing efficiencies. Strong interaction of the turbulent flow with the solid baffles may adversely affect hydraulic, mixing and disinfection performance of the contact system. Recirculating and jet zones created in the tank may require high chlorine dosages to yield adequate disinfection levels, which can result in the formations of high disinfection by-products (DBPs) in the treated water. The use of treated water by the consumers with high chlorine dosages and DBPs may lead to environmental and health problems in the long-term. Disinfection efficiency of the tank can be increased by the modification of the baffles and required disinfection levels can be achieved using lower chlorine dosages. In this study, performance of a patented baffle design is evaluated by means of numerical simulations on a full-scale contact tank. Sel...

This study is one of the first to investigate the genetic background of economically important traits in dairy goats using the caprine 50K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip. The aim of the project was to perform a genomewide association study for milk yield and conformation of udder, teat, and feet and legs. A total of 137,235 milk yield records on 4,563 goats each scored for 10 conformation traits were available. Out of these, 2,381 goats were genotyped with the Illumina Caprine 50K BeadChip (Illumina Inc., San Diego, CA). A range of pseudo-phenotypes were used including deregressed breeding values and pseudo-estimated breeding values. Genome-wide association studies were performed using the multi-locus mixed model (MLMM) algorithm implemented in SNP & Variation Suite v7.7.8 (Golden Helix Inc., Bozeman, MT). A genome-wise significant [−log 10 (P-value) > 5.95] SNP for milk yield was identified on chromosome 19, with additional chromosomewise significant (−log 10 (P-value) > 4.46] SNP on chromosomes 4, 8, 14, and 29. Three genome-wise significant SNP for conformation of udder attachment, udder depth, and front legs were identified on chromosome 19, and chromosome-wise SNP were found on chromosomes 4

However, these traits are relatively reliable until the measurable effects are expressed on desired traits. Therefore, we aimed to associate the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotype of the investigated characteristics and reproductive loci. A total of 46 male dogs are divided into three age groups (I ≤ 3 years, n = 19; II 4-6 years; n = 19, and III ≥7 years, n = 8). The testis, scrotum and body weight, libido sexualis and ejaculation time for each fraction were monitored as functional traits, while the pH, fractional semen volume, motility, concentration, and abnormal and dead spermatozoa rate were recorded as spermatological traits. The Affymetrix Canine 127 K SNP genotyping array v2 (Affymetrix Inc., California, USA) was used for SNP genotyping. In the primary results, the scrotal circumference was found to be higher in group II compare...

To investigate the genetic architecture of fatty acid composition of sheep, we conducted genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and estimated genomic heritabilities for fatty acid profile in Longissimus dorsi muscle of 216 male sheep. Genomic heritability estimates for fatty acid content ranged from 0.25 to 0.46, indicating that substantial genetic variation exists for the evaluated traits. Therefore, it is possible to alter fatty acid profiles through selection. Twenty-seven genomic regions of 10 adjacent SNPs associated with fatty acids composition were identified on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18, each explaining ≥0.30% of the additive genetic variance. Twenty-three genes supporting the understanding of genetic mechanisms of fat composition in s...
