The objective of this study was to test if the response to 10 cycles of a recurrent selection pro... more The objective of this study was to test if the response to 10 cycles of a recurrent selection program conducted under conventional tillage and rain fed conditions was the same when contrasted, for several traits, under conventional and non-tillage practices. During two season (2011 and 2012) the 44 S-derived families (four/C 0 to C 10 populations) were evaluated under conventional and non-tillage systems in two fields next to each other. Days to anthesis, plant height, grain, and biomass yield and 1000-grain weight were determined. The grain number per m 2 and harvest index was also estimated. From a random sample of 10 tillers the spikelet per spike and grains per spike were measured. For each trait, a linear mixed model (regression) was fitted to the experimental data. The slopes, under conventional tillage, were significant greater than zero for grain yield, harvest index, seeds per square meter, spikelet per spike and seeds per spike. Under non-tillage the list of traits showing slopes significantly greater than zero was shorter. For most traits there was a significant difference in the intercept terms between conventional tillage and non-tillage, which is interpreted as the tillage-practice effect. The concurrent evaluation in conventional and non-tillage soil managements of ten cycles of a recurrent selection program performed under conventional tillage confirmed the occurrence of a significant genetic progress only under conventional tillage.

One of the current standard approaches to the study of animal welfare is measuring hypothalamic–p... more One of the current standard approaches to the study of animal welfare is measuring hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal activity, frequently in association with behavioral assessment. We studied the effects of food‐based environmental enrichment on adrenocortical activity and behavior in zoo‐housed collared anteaters (Tamandua tetradactyla; n = 5). We successfully validated measurements of fecal cortisol metabolites (FCMs) using an 11‐oxoetiocholanolone enzyme immunoassay by stimulating (ACTH injection) and suppressing (dexamethasone administration) adrenocortical activity. Three months later, we subjected animals to an ABA‐type experiment (three 6‐week periods): pre‐enrichment (routine diet: A), enrichment (modified diet: B), and post‐enrichment (routine diet: A) periods. We assessed adrenocortical activity by collecting individual feces three times a week (total number of samples: 228), and evaluated behavior by performing 3 days of behavioral observations per period (with a total of 3,600 behavioral data points for the individuals studied). Statistical analysis revealed changes in FCM concentrations (µg/g) over the periods (3.04 ± 0.68, 2.98 ± 0.66, and 4.04 ± 0.90, respectively). Additionally, it showed that the number of FCM peaks was highly reduced during enrichment; meanwhile active natural behaviors were significantly increased. We consider that these changes in response to food‐based environmental enrichment improved the welfare of individual zoo‐housed collared anteaters. The objective of the present investigation was to examine the relationships between agronomical b... more The objective of the present investigation was to examine the relationships between agronomical behavior and grain quality along ten cycles of a recurrent selection program performed under rainfed condition. Twenty-four lines, four for each one of the 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 cycles of recurrent selection, were evaluated for two consecutive years (2011 and 2012). The experimental lines were evaluated under conventional (CT) and no tillage (NT) systems. Grain yield and grain weight were determined and harvest index and grain number estimated. Flour protein content, sodium dodecyl sulphate sedimentation (IS-SDS) and lactic acid SRC (LASRC) were considered as end-use quality predictive tests. The Spearman correlation coefficient was used to measure the relationships among yield, its components and grain quality parameters. Within the context of CT, flour protein content was negatively associated with all the agronomic variables. The IS-SDS has a negative association with the grain weight; meanwhile, LASRC associated positively with all the agronomic variables. When wheat was grown in NT, the relationship between IS-SDS and harvest index, like LASRC with all agronomic traits, was positive. Confining the discussion to the CT results, after ten cycles of recurrent selection the highest grain yield achieved was accompanied by a decrease in protein percentage. However, the decrease in the percentage of protein in more advanced selection cycles was offset by an improvement of its quality.

Aim and background We present a typology of cacao agroforest systems in Colombian Amazonia. These... more Aim and background We present a typology of cacao agroforest systems in Colombian Amazonia. These systems had yet to be described in the literature, especially their potential in terms of biodiversity conservation. The systems studied are located in a post-conflict area, and a deforestation front in Colombian Amazonia. Cacao cropping systems are of key importance in Colombia: cacao plays a prime role in post conflict resolution, as cacao is a legal crop to replace illegal crops; cacao agroforests are expected to be a sustainable practice, promoting forest-friendly land use. Material and methods We worked in 50 x 2000 m 2 agroforest plots, in Colombian Amazonia. A cluster analysis was used to build a typology based on 28 variables characterised in each plot, and related to diversity, composition, spatial structure and light availability for the cacao trees. We included variables related to light availability to evaluate the amount of transmitted radiation to the cacao trees in each type, and its suitability for cacao ecophysiological development. Main results We identified 4 types of cacao agroforests based on differences concerning tree species diversity and the impact of canopy spatial structure on light availability for the cacao trees in the understorey. We found 127 tree species in the dataset, with some exclusive species in each type. We also found that 3 out of the 4 types identified displayed an erosion of tree species diversity. Nitric oxide (NO) is a signal molecule involved in several physiological processes in plants, inc... more Nitric oxide (NO) is a signal molecule involved in several physiological processes in plants, including root development. Despite the importance of NO as a root growth regulator, the knowledge about the genes and metabolic pathways modulated by NO in this process is still limited. A constraint to unravel these pathways has been the use of exogenous applications of NO donors that may produce toxic effects. We have analyzed the role of NO in root architecture through the depletion of endogenous NO using the scavenger cPTIO. Sunflower seedlings growing in liquid medium supplemented with cPTIO showed unaltered primary root length while the number of lateral roots was deeply reduced; indicating that endogenous NO participates in determining root branching in sunflower. The transcriptional changes induced by NO depletion have been analyzed using a large-scale approach. A microarray analysis showed 330 genes regulated in the roots (p≤0.001) upon endogenous NO depletion. A general cPTIO-induced up-regulation of genes involved in the lignin biosynthetic pathway was observed. Even if no detectable changes in total lignin content could be detected, cell walls analyses revealed that the ratio G/S lignin increased in roots treated with cPTIO. This means that endogenous NO may control lignin composition in planta. Our results suggest that a fine tuning regulation of NO levels could be used by plants to regulate root architecture and lignin composition. The functional implications of these findings are discussed.
