Participants (183 male, 69 female) from a variety of treatment settings completed the Spiritual H... more Participants (183 male, 69 female) from a variety of treatment settings completed the Spiritual Health Inventory (internal and external spiritual well being; Chappell, 1995), the Surrender Scale (Reinert et al., 1995); and the Life Orientation Test (a measure of optimism; Scheier &amp; Carver, 1985). Although all three measures were significant predictors of perceived quality of recovery and the total number of 12 Steps completed, surrender, optimism, and internal spiritual well being (not external spiritual well being) differed significantly by (1) length of recovery (&lt; 1 year vs. 1 year or more), (2) level of recovery behaviors (high vs. low), and (3) whether Steps 1-3 had been completed. The results indicate that spirituality is an important element in recovery and support the concept of including the practice of spirituality as part of recovery programs.

This study examined relationships among measures of family functioning (FACES-II), number of fami... more This study examined relationships among measures of family functioning (FACES-II), number of family addictions, and risk of alcoholism (Short Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test, SMAST) in a college sample. Multiple regression analyses indicated that the number of family addictions and the additively combined FACES-II scales each predicted scores on the SMAST. Thus, addictions in the family contribute to offspring alcoholism both directly, through their presence, and indirectly, through family functioning. Information on the history of a wide range of family addictions and on the functioning style of the family of origin can be valuable in assessing and addressing addiction risk.

ABSTRACT This study used the example of offspring abusive drinking associated with family dysfunc... more ABSTRACT This study used the example of offspring abusive drinking associated with family dysfunction and family addictions to examine the specific question &quot;Which children are more influenced by family of origin and what are these effects?&quot; In this study, roles in the family and the individual&#39;s personality type were found to moderate the effects of family-of-origin variables on abusive drinking in 674 young adults. For example, the family role of &quot;hero&quot; acted as a buffer between the family of origin and the young adult&#39;s drinking behaviors, whereas the &quot;scapegoat&quot; role was associated with heightened vulnerability. The argument that children are differentially and predictably influenced by a dysfunctional family of origin was supported.

Al... more In the present study, a brief version of the Children's Role Inventory (CRI-60) was developed. Along with other measures, 840 undergraduates completed the CRI-60. Exploratory factor analysis yielded two interpretable factors (Hero vs. Scapegoat, Mascot vs. Lost Child). Structural equation modeling (SEM) procedures identified items for four 5-item CRI scales (CRI-20). Each CRI-20 scale correlated closely with the corresponding CRI-60 scale. Selecting the highest 5-item scale score, four categories were established. Category differences were found for family dysfunction and codependency. Further, χ 2-tests indicated that participants in the CRI-20 categories differed significantly in risk of alcoholism, self-reported addiction, and father's addiction. Potter and Williams (1991) developed the Children's Roles Inventory (CRI-60) to assess children's roles in families with an alcoholic parent. Following the terminology of Black (1981) and Wegscheider (1981), items were developed that seemed related to four extreme roles in the family that the child of an alcoholic might take on: Hero, Mascot, Lost Child, and Scapegoat. When taken to extremes, each of these roles is costly to the child in the family; however, the roles of Lost Child and Scapegoat are particularly challenging.

Debt Begets Debt: Examining Negative Credit Card Behaviors and Other Forms of Consumer Debt

The effect of negative credit card behaviors is examined for association with other forms of cons... more The effect of negative credit card behaviors is examined for association with other forms of consumer debt (automobile debt, installment debt, and personal loan debt). Data were collected using a combination of random digit dialing and convenience sampling from two cities. Respondents' median age is 48 years old, ranging from 20-87. Results indicate that despite controlling for income, not paying off the monthly balance and reaching the maximum limit on credit cards are associated with a variety of other debts. Although consumers can increase lifetime utility by borrowing, less educated consumers are more vulnerable to less favorable sources of credit. Negative credit card behaviors can be easily identifiable signals of larger lurking issues related to consumer behavior or lack of financial literacy. This perspective organizes the prediction of pathological alcohol involvement (and, by extension, more general substance abuse) through consideration of biological contributions, psychological factors, and social influences. Conjoining this model with the family stress and coping model (see McKenry & Price, Chapter 1, this volume) acknowledges the contribution of these biopsychosocial factors at each juncture: stressor, resource, perception, coping, and managing. Because our focus in this chapter is on families coping with alcohol and substance abuse, we review several aspects of coping: (a) the factors that give rise to the need for coping, (b) the factors that contribute to coping, and, (c) the outcomes of coping efforts. This study investigated the connections between respondents' feelings about their partners (love)... more This study investigated the connections between respondents' feelings about their partners (love), evaluations of their relationships (equity), perceptions of relationship alternatives, and commitment to remain in their present relationships. It was predicted that love and equity would be better predictors of commitment than would perceived relationship alternatives. Respondents were 297 university students who reported they were involved in close relationships-typically, steady dating relationships-when the data were collected. Results indicated that (a) commitment was moderately associated with love, equity, and alternatives; (b) respondents' perceptions of the quality of their available relationship alternatives explained more of the variance in commitment than either love or equity; and (c) commitment and alternatives loaded on the same factor in an exploratory factor analysis and thus were confounded. Implications of these findings are considered and directions for future research are suggested.
