Long term planning needs to take into account the risk of wind damage in the production forecast of timber products. Traditionally, the management practices implemented to mitigate the threat of wind damage have proved to be overwhelmingly pessimistic, as they have restricted silviculture practices to short rotations and limited thinning regimes. Mechanistic wind risk models like ForestGALES have been used to calculate the return period for overturning and stem breakage by comparing critical wind speeds with the recurrence periods calculated for extreme wind events using a wind climate module derived from the DAMS scoring system. All the calculations are undertaken for the mean tree representing the stand characteristics using information directly input by the user or retrieved from the Forestry Commission Sub-Compa...
Preclinical studies on the effects of abrupt cessation of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors... more Preclinical studies on the effects of abrupt cessation of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), a medication often prescribed in alcohol use disorder (AUD) patients with depression, results in alcohol consumption escalation after resuming drinking. However, a potential neuroinflammatory component on this escalation remains unexplored despite the immunomodulatory role of serotonin. Here, we utilized a rat model of 14-daily administration of the SSRI fluoxetine (10 mg/kg/day) along alcohol self-administration deprivation to study the effects of fluoxetine cessation on neuroinflammation after resuming alcohol drinking. Microglial morphology and inflammatory gene expression were analyzed in prelimbic cortex, striatum, basolateral amygdala and dorsal hippocampus. Results indicated that alcohol drinking reinstatement increased microglial IBA1 immunoreactivity and altered morphometric features of activated microglia (fractal dimension, lacunarity, density, roughness, and cell ar...

Educational level may be a protective factor showing less severe addictive disorders, longer abstinence periods, and better cognitive performance. The aim was to estimate gender-based differences and the influence of educational level on the clinical variables associated with cocaine use disorder (CUD). A total of 300 cocaine-consuming patients undergoing treatments were recruited and assessed using the Psychiatric Research Interview for Substance and Mental Diseases according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision. Women developed CUD later but exhibited more consumption of anxiolytics, prevalence of anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and major depressive disorders. Alcohol and cannabis use disorders were more frequent in men. A predictive model was created and identified three psychiatric variables with good p...

The endocannabinoid (ECB) system has been proposed as a novel therapeutic target to treat AD. The present study explores the expression of the ECB system, the ECB-related receptor GPR55, and cognitive functions (novel object recognition; NOR) in the 5xFAD (FAD: family Alzheimer’s disease) transgenic mouse model of AD. Experiments were performed on heterozygous (HTZ) and homozygous (HZ) 11 month old mice. Protein expression of ECB system components, neuroinflammation markers, and β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques were analyzed in the hippocampus. According to the NOR test, anxiety-like behavior and memory were altered in both HTZ and HZ 5xFAD mice. Furthermore, both animal groups displayed a reduction of cannabinoid (CB1) receptor expression in the hippocampus, which is related to memory dysfunction. This finding was associated with indirect markers of enhanced ECB production, resulting from the combination of i...

A long forgotten phenomenon in this regard is the D-AA-stimulated ethylene production in plants. As a starting point to investigate this effect theArabidopsisaccession Landsberg erecta (Ler) got into focus as it was found defective in metabolizing D-AAs. Combining genetics and molecular biology of T-DNA lines and natural variants together with biochemical and physiological approaches we could identify AtDAT1 as a major D-AA transaminase inArabidopsis. Atdat1loss-of-function mutants andArabidopsisaccessions with defectiveAtDAT1alleles were not able to produce D-Ala, D-Glu and L-Met, the metabolites of D-Met, anymore. This result corroborates the biochemical characterization of AtDAT1, which showed highest activity using D-Met as substrate. Germination of seedlings in light and dark led to enhanced growth inhibition ofatdat1mutants on D...

IL-6 administration in rodents has yielded contradictory results regarding its effects on steatosis progression. In some models of fatty liver disease, high doses of human IL-6 ameliorate the liver steatosis, whereas restoration of IL-6 in DIO IL-6-/- mice up-regulates hepatic lipogenic enzymes and aggravates steatosis. We further examined the effects of chronic low doses of murine IL-6 on hepatic lipid metabolism in WT mice in DIO. IL-6 was delivered twice daily in C57BL/6J DIO mice for 15 days. The status and expression of IL-6-signalling mediators and targets were investigated in relation to the steatosis and lipid content in blood and in liver. IL-6 administration in DIO mice markedly raised circulating levels of lipids, glucose and leptin, elevated fat liver content and aggravated steatosis. Under IL-6 treatment there was hepatic Stat3 activation and increased gene expressio...

Recently, oleoylethanolamide (OEA) has been reported to reduce alcohol intake and relapse in rodents but the contribution of OEA and other acylethanolamides in alcohol addiction in humans is unknown. The present study is aimed to characterize the plasma acylethanolamides in alcohol dependence. Seventy-nine abstinent alcohol-dependent subjects (27 women) recruited from outpatient treatment programs and age-/sex-/body mass-matched healthy volunteers (28 women) were clinically assessed with the diagnostic interview PRISM according to the DSM-IV-TR after blood extraction for quantification of acylethanolamide concentrations in the plasma. Our results indicate that all acylethanolamides were significantly increased in alcohol-dependent patients compared with control subjects (p < 0.001). A logistic model based on these acylethanolamides wa...

It presents an overview of the data sources and applications that are used to map, monitor and estimate forest parameters. In particular, it deals with methods that use data from space borne sensors as well as methods that utilise terrestrial, active remote-sensing methods. The paper also comments on techniques that have already been used in Ireland, but also discusses other methodologies that are relevant to the Irish forest sector, including supporting field based inventories, updating digital map datasets and providing high-resolution forest stand estimates at a range of scales. In addition, the paper presents techniques to monitor land-use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) and to upscale field plot measurements with remotely sensed data.

Multiple blood conservation strategies have been developed to decrease transfusion risks and requirements in patients undergoing hip replacement surgery. Anti-fibrinolytic compounds such as tranexamic acid (TXA) administered systemically during the perioperative period have demonstrated promising results. This study aimed to retrospectively review the effectiveness of tranexamic acid alone and in conjunction with the use of a bipolar sealer in reducing allogeneic blood transfusions in DA THA. METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed 173 patients who underwent a unilateral DA THA performed by two fellowship trained, board certified orthopedic surgeons during a one year period. Subjects were divided into 3 groups: TXA + bipolar sealer (49 patients), TXA alone (63 patients), and control group utilizi...

However the conditions under which signals from the ground and vegetation can be detected will vary as a result of sensor specifications, vegetation characteristics and underlying surface properties. This paper demonstrates the utility of a ray tracing radiative transfer model for assessing sensitivity to site-specific conditions (e.g., topography, canopy and ground reflectance) that will improve our ability to estimate structural parameters in forest ecosystems.
