Reliable mathematical modeling is demanded to analyze and control those dynamical systems. This paper adopts a fractional approach to extend an extant mathematical model of test rig for active tilting-pad bearings. Along with related results, the theoretical framework here presented may contribute to better understand such dynamic behavior, possibly supporting the development of more efficient control strategies for this important mechanical system.

Disponible: dx.doi.org/10.5380/ ce.v27i0.87127 RESUMEN Objetivo: analizar los factores asociados a la angustia mental en personas con diabetes mellitus durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Método: estudio transversal, realizado en dos comunidades virtuales brasileñas de la plataforma Facebook, en el período de agosto de 2020 a enero de 2021. La muestra fue de 111 personas con diabetes. La evaluación de las condiciones de salud se realizó mediante un formulario electrónico, y se utilizó el Self Report Questionnaire-20 para identificar el sufrimiento mental. Los análisis descriptivos e inferenciales se expresaron mediante frecuencias y regresión logística simple y múltiple. Resultados: el sufrimiento mental está asociado a la condición de ser de género femenino, tener antecedentes de trastorno mental (depresión y ansiedad), el diagnóstico de diabetes desde hace más de seis años y a la presencia de complicaciones oftalmológicas, que potencializan las posibilidades de inestabilidades emocionales. Conclusión: el estudio ofrece subsidios para la dirección de estrategias de apoyo que minimicen los impactos psicosociales de la pandemia en las personas con diabetes.

Accordingly, an interdisciplinary approach involving concepts from biology to materials science can provide a deeper understanding of biological systems pertaining the disease. In this context, fractional calculus (also referred to as non-integer order) is a branch in mathematical analysis whose tools can describe complex phenomena comprising different time and space scales. Fractional-order models may allow a better description and understanding of oncological particularities, potentially contributing to decision-making in areas of interest such as tumor evolution, early diagnosis techniques and personalized treatment therapies. By following a phenomenological (i.e. mechanistic) approach, the present study surveys and explores different aspects of Fractional Mathematical Oncology, reviewing and discussing recent developments in view of their prospective applications.

Factors Associated with Mental Suffering in People with Diabetes Mellitus During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Objective: to analyze the factors associated with mental distress in people with diabetes mellitu... more Objective: to analyze the factors associated with mental distress in people with diabetes mellitus during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: cross-sectional study, conducted in two Brazilian virtual communities of the Facebook platform, in the period from August 2020 to January 2021. The sample totaled 111 people with diabetes. The evaluation of health conditions was performed using an electronic form, and the Self Report Questionnaire-20 was used to identify mental suffering. Descriptive and inferential analyses were expressed by frequencies and simple and multiple logistic regression. Results: mental suffering is associated with being female, having a previous history of mental disorders (depression and anxiety), having been diagnosed with diabetes for more than six years, and the presence of ophthalmologic complications, which increase the chances of emotional instability. Conclusion: the study offers subsidies to the direction of support strategies that minimize the psychosocial impacts of the pandemic on people with diabetes.

Interest has been recently devoted to historical and philosophical aspects about fractional calcu... more Interest has been recently devoted to historical and philosophical aspects about fractional calculus (FC) and its adoption as additional mathematical tool in different physics areas as well as in other scientific applications. However, potential application of FC towards relativity is still lacking. In relativity theory, Lorentz transformation of time and position coordinates plays a major role while the corresponding outcomes still defy our 'common sense' (e.g. time dilation and space contraction). As some problems in physics can be solved by following different mathematical routes leading to the same result, the present paper suggests an alternative method to relativity. Instead of converting time and position data from different inertial reference frames through Lorentz transformation, it is here envisaged to numerically adjust relativistic results with the help of FC. Bearing in mind well established postulates from relativity, we intend to fill up this gap by addressing and discussing the main arguments in favour of the prospective use of FC as emergent and alternative tool applied to relativity.

This work aimed at developing numerical models to predict the moisture and size of slices of gels... more This work aimed at developing numerical models to predict the moisture and size of slices of gels containing gelatinized or native cornstarch and calcium alginate, during convective drying. The coupling of mass transfer and shrinkage simulated the drying kinetics with evaluation of effective mass diffusivity. Drying of gels containing 34% wb cornstarch (GC90 and RC90 samples) were well fitted by the analytical solution of Fick's second law, with R² of 0.963-0.998. The numerical model developed in finite element method via COMSOL Multiphysics better described the drying of gels formulated with 5.4% wb of cornstarch (GC50 and RC50 samples), yielding R² of 0.958-0.992. Shrinkage was estimated by the molar flux of water and simulated by the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method. The shrinkage term modified the drying rate profiles and a pseudo-constant rate period was observed. The developed model can be applied in drying studies of gels or foodstuffs with high shrinkage ratio.
