This work presents a simulation model for point-to-point transmission of encrypted data using the... more This work presents a simulation model for point-to-point transmission of encrypted data using the application layer of Open Smart Grid Protocol (OSGP). The simulation aims to verify the integrity of the data transmitted from one point to another using Power Line Communication (PLC). The simulation model was developed in MATLAB and uses RSA, AES, RC-6, and 3-DES cryptographies to encode data. Data transmission uses PLC technique with Gaussian Minimmum Shift Key (GMSK) modulation. Results demonstrate that it is possible to use the OSGP protocol in the application layer with different criteria, which can be used according to the data size. It was applied a Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) in the transmission to simulate the effects that exist in a real network. The experiments demonstrate that RC-6 outperforms the other cryptographic algorithms, presenting the smallest execution time, with low memory requirements.

However, cloud computing relies on remote, mainly centralized resource provisioning, which poses substantial problems in the support of time-critical and location-aware IoT applications. Fog computing, on the other hand, recently emerged as an intermediate solution to solve the mentioned cloud computing limitations, but its embryonic status still prevents it from being used in real developments.

The specific capabilities of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), such as fast deployment and flexibi... more The specific capabilities of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), such as fast deployment and flexibility, together with the low cost solutions that can be achieved, bring new opportunities for an all-new range of applications, far from the typical scenarios of low requirements and high redundancy. Some of these new scenarios involve the assurance of predefined performance goals. To guarantee that these goals are achieved, a careful constant monitoring must exist. However, this monitoring depletes nodes energy (especially in middle nodes that have to retransmit the information to the sink), increases interference between nodes and causes an overhead in the used bandwidth, a foreseeable result if measuring performance of a large multilevel WSN. In the protocol to be presented, data fusion is used to enhance the benefits of continuous monitoring while minimizing its implied overhead, using the specific characteristics of WSNs in its favor.

Large urban areas are nowadays covered by millions of wireless devices, including not only cellul... more Large urban areas are nowadays covered by millions of wireless devices, including not only cellular equipment carried by their inhabitants, but also several ubiquitous and pervasive platforms used to monitor and/or actuate on a variety of phenomena in the city area. Whereas the former are increasingly powerful devices equipped with advanced processors, large memory capacity, high bandwidth, and several wireless interfaces, the latter are typically resource constrained systems. Despite their differences, both kinds of systems share the same ecosystem, and therefore, it is possible to build symbiotic relationships between them. Our research aims at creating a resource-sharing platform to support such relationships, in the perspective that resource unconstrained devices can assist constrained ones, while the latter can extend the features of the former. Resource sharing between heterogeneous networks in an urban area poses several challenges, not only from a technical point of view, but also from a social perspective. In this paper we present our symbiotic resource-sharing proposal while discussing its impact on networks and citizens.

The Internet of Things (IoT) describes a vision of a future Internet where constrained sensing an... more The Internet of Things (IoT) describes a vision of a future Internet where constrained sensing and actuating devices are part of distributed applications and required to support standard Internet communications with more powerful devices or Internet hosts. This vision will require appropriate end-to-end communications and security mechanisms that are well suited to the constraints and characteristics of sensing devices and applications, while being able to support standard Internet communication mechanisms. With this motivation in mind, we propose an architecture supporting low-power end-to-end transport-layer secure communications with mutual authentication using ECC public-key cryptography for Internetintegrated sensing applications. The proposed architecture promotes the availability of critical resources on constrained sensing platforms and security against Internet-originated threats, while providing full compatibility with current standardization proposals. Those are fundamental enabling factors of most of the sensing applications envisioned for the IoT and, as far as we known, ours is the first architecture implemented and experimentally evaluated with such goals.

A presente revisão integrativa de literatura investigou as relações existentes entre a educação e... more A presente revisão integrativa de literatura investigou as relações existentes entre a educação escolar e a conduta infracional em adolescentes. As bases de dados consultadas foram PsycINFO, LILACS e Scielo, no período de 2008 a 2012. Aplicados critérios de inclusão e de exclusão, a revisão incidiu sobre 32 artigos. Os resultados evidenciaram que aspectos negativos da vivência escolar não somente contribuem para o desenvolvimento de conduta infracional na adolescência, como também se constituem em preditores significativos, especialmente a "fraca vinculação escolar". Todavia, trata-se de um processo de natureza complexa que é perpassado por múltiplos fatores pertencentes a diferentes domínios, que se encontram na dependência indireta de outros agentes e contextos sociais, apresentando também intensidade variada. Evidenciou-se ainda a necessidade de realização de mais estudos nacionais com vistas a uma melhor compreensão das especificidades da realidade educacional brasileira.

This paper presents a survey on the QoS support and on resource allocation for LAN Ethernet networks, and describes a new proposal in the scope of the EuQoS project. The proposed solution is validated as proof of concept both by simulation and real testbeds. EuQoS is an FP6 IST Integrated Project with the aim of proposing, developing and studying end-to-end QoS support for Internet applications such as voice, video-conferencing, video-streaming and tele-engineering.

ABSTRACT While realizing that most of the applications currently envisioned for the Internet of T... more ABSTRACT While realizing that most of the applications currently envisioned for the Internet of Things (IoT) are critical in respect to security, we may expect that such sensing applications may benefit from the availability of end-to-end IPv6 communications with Internet hosts. Research and standardization work is starting to produce mechanisms that may enable end-to-end communications using IPv6-enabled constrained sensing devices, and such communications will raise serious security challenges that must be addressed in the context of a proper integration architecture that is yet to be standardized for the IoT. In our work we target the fundamental question on the effectiveness of the usage of security mechanisms to protect end-to-end communications involving Internet hosts and constrained sensing devices. We describe mechanisms to enable security at the network-layer and at the application-layer and perform an extensive experimental evaluation study with the goal of identifying the most appropriate secure communications mechanisms and the limitations of current sensing platforms in supporting end-to-end secure communications in the context of Internet-integrated sensing applications.

In these new scenarios, performance must be monitored and effectively measured, in order to guarantee that the network fulfills initial expectations. However, measuring performance in WSN has not the same requirements as measuring performance in traditional networks. While new specific WSN metrics have been proposed to cope with the new specific needs of these networks, a global performance framework for evaluating WSN does not yet exist. In this paper, WSN specific communication performance needs are analyzed and, to measure them, an initial approach to a global framework of WSN performance metrics is proposed. These metrics are intended to evaluate the real-time performance of a WSN, providing the necessary measurements to indicate if the QoS expectations are being met.

This paper presents Hermes, a new modular platform that can be used in a variety of scenarios, in... more This paper presents Hermes, a new modular platform that can be used in a variety of scenarios, including the role of body area network coordinator, enabling temperature, movement and heartbeat sensing, local and remote communication, and indoor and outdoor localization. Hermes is based on two main modules that can operate as a single system in a coordinated fashion or individually, depending on the application scenario. One of the modules uses a Telos-inspired architecture, with new processing, communication, sensing, storage and energy subsystems, and executing TinyOS. The other module is designed around a PIC 24F MCU, also supporting communication, sensing, storage, and executing a custom operating system. Both modules have expansion capabilities. The main innovative aspects of the implemented platform are its modularity and its capability to provide device abstraction, which considerably eases application development. The paper addresses the platform motivation, requirements, hardware architecture, implementation details, and performance evaluation.

Recent critical application sectors of sensor networks like military, health care, and industry r... more Recent critical application sectors of sensor networks like military, health care, and industry require the use of mobile sensor nodes, something that poses unique challenges in aspects like handoff delay, packet loss, and reliability. In this paper we propose a novel mobility model that handles those challenges effectively by providing on-time mobility detection and handoff triggering. In that way soft handoffs and controlled disconnections are assured. The proposed solution uses crosslayer information from the MAC and Network layers. Our solution was implemented and evaluated in an experimental testbed, in the context of the European FP7 GINSENG project.

Recent critical application sectors of sensor networks like military, health care, and industry r... more Recent critical application sectors of sensor networks like military, health care, and industry require the use of mobile sensor nodes, something that poses unique challenges in aspects like handoff delay, packet loss, and reliability. In this paper we propose a novel mobility model that handles those challenges effectively by providing on-time mobility detection and handoff triggering. In that way soft handoffs and controlled disconnections are assured. The proposed solution uses crosslayer information from the MAC and Network layers. Our solution was implemented and evaluated in an experimental testbed, in the context of the European FP7 GINSENG project.
