One particular interest concerns the simulation of possible changes in rainfall and surface air temperature due to an assumed increase of greenhouse gases. However, the models yield the climatic projections on grid points that in most cases do not correspond to the sites of major interest. To achieve local estimates of the climatological variables, methods like the one known as statistical downscaling are applied. In this article we show a case in point by applying canonical correlation analysis (CCA) to the Guajira region in the northeast of Colombia.

The correction of double adjacent errors ensures that the most common types of MCUs are corrected. At the same time, SEC-DED-DAEC codes require the same number of parity check bits as traditional SEC-DED codes. The main overhead associated with SEC-DED-DAEC codes is the increase in decoding complexity that can impact access time and circuit power and area. In this paper, a method to design SEC-DED-DAEC codes with optimized decoding is presented and evaluated. The proposed scheme starts by setting some constraints on the parity check matrix of the codes. Those constraints are then used to simplify the decoding. The proposed scheme has been implemented and evaluated for different word-lengths. The results show that, for data words of 32 bits, the scheme can be implemented with the same number of parity check bits as SEC-DED codes. For 16 and 64 bits words, an additional parity check bit is required, making the scheme less attractive. With the proposed method, the decoders can be optimized for area or speed. Both implementations are evaluated and compared with existing SEC-DED-DAEC decoders. The results show that the proposed decoders reduce significantly the circuit area, power, and delay.

Serological HBV markers were found in 87% of anti-HIV positive patients. The difference in markers of viral replication (HBeAg, HBV-DNA) was not statistically significant between the two groups. It has been suggested that HBV infection of peripheral blood mononuclear cells could be a cofactor implicated in the development of immunodeficiency due to HIV. For this reason we have investigated the presence of HBV-DNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells by in situ hybridization. Although its detection was more frequent in anti-HIV positive patients than in anti-HIV negative ones (p < 0.05), it was not related to clinical state of immunodeficiency. With regard to serological HBV markers, HBV-DNA was detected in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from antiHBc w/o antiHBs patients. Within this tradition, in this work, we analyze the discourse of six families who granted permission for organ donation and three who refused. We describe the process-based interpretation of this experience and identify psychosocial variables and processes that further our understanding of the decision finally adopted. We have identified two heuristics that guide family decision when organ donation is requested: the explicit or inferred will of the deceased and family attitudes to organ donation and transplant. It is postulated that the interaction of these two factors explains a large amount of the decisions made. We also hypothesize that a marked discrepancy between these two factors increases the importance of other aspects, especially the role of the transplant coordinator and of othe...

Thalassemias are particularly frequent in Mediterranean countries, the Middle East, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and in the Southeast Asia. T... more An /-group will be denoted by the pair (G, P), where G is the group and P is the positive cone. The cone Q is an essential extension of P if every convex /-subgroup of (G, Q) is a convex /-subgroup of (G, P). Q is very essential over P if it is essential over P and for each O^x e G and each ß-value D of x, there is a unique .P-value C of x containing D. We seek conditions which are preserved by essential extensions; normal valuedness and the existence of a finite basis are so preserved. We then investigate /-groups which have the property that their positive cone has no proper very essential extensions. Q is a c-essential extension of P if Q is essential over P and every closed convex /-subgroup of (G, Q) is closed in (G, P). We show that a wreath product of totally ordered groups has no proper very c-essential extensions. We derive a sufficient condition for the nonexistence of such extensions in case the /-group has property (F) : no positive element exceeds an infinite set of pairwise disjoint elements.

During a 1-month period, 96 consecutive patients were evaluated on the first day of admission by an independent rater, using the Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale and the Confusional Assessment Method. Frequency of alcohol use and demographic data were recorded. CCU teams rarely made diagnoses of anxiety, depression, or delirium. On at least one screening test, 29.2% of patients were positive. Delirium was present in 7.3%, depression in 13.7%, anxiety in 24%, and possible problem drinking in 37.9%. Although some form of psychiatric treatment was offered to 58%, there was low agreement between psychiatric diagnoses made by the independent rater and the diagnoses made and treatments used by CCU staff. This suggests that the CCU staff are using psychotropic medications without any clear documentation and perhaps clear understanding of the psychiatric diagnoses they are treating. In summary, we found high rates of psychiatric disorders in adult CCU patients but low rates of detection and only moderate rates of treatment by CCU staff.

This research examines the relationship between personal mobility rate (number of lifetime moves/... more This research examines the relationship between personal mobility rate (number of lifetime moves/respondent's age) and health status. A contextual analysis is proposed in which the health consequences of relocation depend not only on the immediate circumstances surrounding a move, but also on the broader context of the individual's residential history, current life situation, and aspirations for the future. Two hundred and forty-two adult employees completed an initial survey of lifetime residential history, current residential desirability, employment experience, and perceived housing options for the future. Three months later, a panel group of 121 respondents completed a follow-up survey of emotional and physical well-being. Frequent relocation was directly associated with a greater number of illness-related symptoms, but the impact of mobility rate was largely mediated by psychological factors. Health problems were more prevalent among high-mobility individuals characterized by low rather than high levels of environmental exploratory tendency; among low-mobility persons reporting low versus high levels of residential choice and congruence; and among low residential-quality individuals who perceived future residential options to be unavailable rather than available. employees who have changed residence due to a job transfer (Syme et al., 1965) and the heightened incidence of depression among wives of transferred employees (Brett,

A 33-day, continuous time series of radial and vector surface current fields was acquired starting on 23 August ending 25 September 2003. Over a 30-min sample interval, WERA mapped coastal ocean currents over an ≈40 km × 80 km footprint with a 1.2-km horizontal resolution. A total of 1628 snapshots of the vector surface currents was acquired, with only 70 samples (4.3%) missing from the vector time series. Comparisons to subsurface measurements from two moored acoustic Doppler current profilers revealed RMS differences of 1 to 5 cm s−1 for both radial and Cartesian current components. Regression analyses indicated slopes close to unity with small biases between surface and subsurface measurements at 4-m depth in the east–west (u) and north–south (υ) components, respectively. Vector correlation coefficients were 0.9 w...

The mutation was found in a heterozygous state in 11 cases and in a homozygous state in three cases. These are the first cases with Hb Agrinio described in Spain. In all cases where a leucine is exchanged for a proline, an unstable hemoglobin (Hb) will occur both in the α and the β chain. Some of these are as unstable as Hb Agrinio and their presence is difficult to detect except by DNA sequencing.

T... more An /-group will be denoted by the pair (G, P), where G is the group and P is the positive cone.

In particular, we construct such a lattice-ordered group which admits no embedding into an Archimedean lattice-ordered group with a strong order unit.
