This report demonstrates the hidden costs of public sector job losses. Key findings: Rapid loss o... more This report demonstrates the hidden costs of public sector job losses. Key findings: Rapid loss of public sector workers, especially those with more experience and skill, will result in the loss of corporate knowledge and hinder the transfer of skills within the South Australian public service. This loss represents a considerable value which needs to be taken into account in public sector workforce planning. Over the next five years an accelerating retirement rate of public servants will coincide with the significant expansion of the resources sector. Combined these forces will result in tightening of the South Australian labour market. In this environment it will be more difficult to attract and retain experienced workers in the public sector. Loss of knowledge and skill in this context is particularly problematic. It may harm the ability of the State Government to deliver its programs effectively and efficiently. The report shows that $1 invested in financial counselling services generates $5 of benefits for recipients.

It consisted of a number of multiple and free response questions exploring the perceived impact of the South Australian Budget for 2010-11 on the delivery of State Government services to the community, and the impact on the work quality, workload and work satisfaction of employees. This report focuses on the perspectives of PSA members on the impact of the State Budget on staff. A previously released companion report considers the effects of the State Budget on the delivery of Government Services.

WorkCoverSA commissioned the Australian Institute for Social Research (AISR) at The University of... more WorkCoverSA commissioned the Australian Institute for Social Research (AISR) at The University of Adelaide to undertake a research project designed to increase understanding of factors in the workplace that affect the achievement of positive return to work outcomes. This included the development of an Index to measure workplace capacity to achieve effective return to work (RTW), initially within one industry and subsequently applying this across various industry sectors. The survey instrument – The Workplace Return to Work Index – is designed to be repeated, in order to measure change over time within organisations and collectively in the sector, and to be applied to other industry sectors. As part of the current project, the survey has been tailored to meet the needs of the Manufacturing Industry, within which the wine and brandy, electronics and meat and livestock processing sectors operate.

This research takes place in the context of an increase in investment by OZ Minerals and other mining companies in exploration and new projects. Data is also presented for other adjacent areas and/or major population centres from which a workforce population can be drawn.
