Then, the division Director came and asked me to do ONE MORE PROJECT; way out on an island. I did not like the flying record of Alaskan bush pilots; about one fatal crash out of ten flights. ... or some such. Anyway, I went. It all went well on the two-row planes, five or so passengers with as much as they can carry of boxes. We landed at the airport ... the gravel flat road ... in the next to the last village. We picked up passenters and boxes, loaded others, and headed down the runway for takeoff. Turning around, the side winds were very strong and gusty, the plane was fully loaded with five passengers and stuffed with boxes. Heading down the runway at full throttle, into a wind from the front-right, the pilot gave all it could do and the small plane began to rise into the wind, but was rocked to the left and the left wheel hit the gravel too close to the lake to stop, he gunned the engine and the plane was "taking off" again with only thirty meters to the lake, we rose shakily, slowly ... I heard the wheels clip the dwarf willows along the lakeshore, then we were flying like a leaf in the wind. Got there, did the project, wrote it up; ran away from my retirement party ... and that is why I was "driving down the road trying to lighten my load" when I got off that Matanuska ferry and was driving toward Portland.

The Tribes have submitted their nomination of Yamsi Mountain, the Home of the North Wind, to the National Register of Historic Places, for values which The Mountain holds for Indian peoples as a Traditional Cultural Property.. The Forest Service has moved to preempt with their own nomination, a fragment of the area. The FS has plans for major equestrian and hiking trails over the top of Yamsi, from Klamath Marsh to the Sycan Marsh, connected to expanded campground enterprises. This would serve the major destination ecotourism resorts around Klamath Lake, now being built by a consortium of County governments and large private investors. Indian families are finding their camping areas invaded by new FS RV sites and horse corrals, and loud, aggressive people who leave Starbucks cups. The very name of Yamsi Ranch indicates its location within the shield of Yamsay Mountain, a spiritual center for all the tribes. This ranch was part of some of the most valued areas of all the nearby peoples. Like Manhattan Island which was "purchased" for a few beads, this water-rich area within the protective, nurturing fingers of Yamsay and Spodue, was acquired through a deal between Whitemen who understood INDIVIDUAL land ownership and Indians for whom it is a contrary to natural law.

Yeats, The Second Coming
