"The Indolence of the Filipino" is an essay written by Rizal and was published in Madrid in 1890. He investigated the root cause of the various factors why Filipinos were perceived as indolence and the effects of Spanish colonialization on our beliefs, culture, and traditions that affect our virtues as Filipinos, including our industriousness, perseverance, critical thinking, and creativity. Rizal started by illustrating the life and way of living of the Filipinos before the arrival of the Spaniards. He stated that Filipinos were not lazy. During pre-colonial times, Filipinos were very productive. Filipinos are doing something every second and every minute. Every day, they hunt to bring home food for their families. They also trade goods, handmade and woven products, and jewelry with foreign traders, such as Chinese and Indonesian, to raise money. They don't run out of things to do for a whole day. Their only rest is sleeping at night. They follow routines to make their lives easier, and they never fail to follow them.

In the said event, Felix Hidalgo was awarded a silver medal for his work, "Las Virgenes Cristianas Expuestas al Populacho", or "Christian Virgins Exposed to the Populace". On the other hand, Juan Luna was awarded a gold medal for his work, "Spolarium". The achievements of both Filipino painters are considered an important milestone not just for the country but also for every Filipino. Both painters held a feast to celebrate their achievements with other Filipinos living in Spain.

There were times when I also thought of his hair style, our national anthem, his novels "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo", his monument in Luneta Park, and many others. As Filipino citizens, we were taught in school that Rizal is our national hero. Our country is known for having unique and diverse cultures and traditions that represent the identity of us as Filipinos and our country, like the Philippine eagle as our national bird, "Baro't Saya" as our national costume, "Anahaw" as our national leaf, "Bahay Kubo" as our national house, Carabao as our national animal, and many others that symbolize us. They are considered national symbols even though there is no law that recognizes and enshrines them. Manny Pacquiao is one of the legends in the field of boxing. He is not known only in the country but also around the world. Many people admire him POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES College of Engineering Sta. Mesa, Manila focus to the point where we forget that we have many more heroes who are more deserving of the title of national hero. Our minds are too focused on his life. I also realized that the knowledge we learned in our school during elementary and high school about Rizal is very different from the information contained in Constantino's book. It is a big slap to us Filipinos that we are still being manipulated to believe information that is contrary to the truth. That's why, as youth, let's continue to fight for the truth, and let's not simply believe what is written in the book about our history.

All Filipinos know Rizal as our national hero, except for our fellow countrymen who grew up abroad that lack knowledge of the history of our country and language. He is popularly known for his novels titled "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo". These knowledges have imprinted in our minds who Rizal really was, but we have yet to fully known him. Our knowledge about Rizal was taught by our teachers when we were still in high school, but what they taught us about Rizal was only superficial so that we could quickly understand and imprint it on our minds. We still don't know much that we must discover to fully know that he is not just a hero. As a college student, I still lack knowledge about Rizal. I still have a lot to learn about discovering Rizal's life. Many people admire him because of the way he fought the Spaniards. I am one of those people who knows Rizal by his name, but I do not idolize him like others do. I still have a lot to study so that I can fully understand his platforms
