Two sets of long-and short-duration words were selected, in each case maximizing duration differences but m atching for frequency, familiarity, phonological similarity, and num ber of pho nem es, and controllin g for semantic associations. Serial recall measures were obtained using auditory and visual presentation and spoken and picturepointing recall. In Experim ents 1a and 1b, using the ®rst set of items, long words were better recalled than short words. In Experim ents 2a and 2b, using the second set of items, no difference was found between long and short disyllabic words. Experiment 3 con®rmed the large advantage for short-duration words in the word set originally selected by Baddeley, . These ®ndings suggest that there is no reliable advantage for short-duration disyllables in span tasks, and that previous accounts of a word-length effect in disyllables are based on accidental differences between list items. T he failure to ®nd an effect of word duration casts doubt on theories that prop ose that the capacity of memory span is determined by the duration of list items or the decay rate of phonological information in short-term m emory.
A total of 18 women with advanced breast cancer were treated with sulofenur [LY186641;N-(5-indany... more A total of 18 women with advanced breast cancer were treated with sulofenur [LY186641;N-(5-indanylsulfonyl)-N′-(4-chlorophenyl)-urea], a diarylsulfonylurea that has broad-spectrum activity against a number of murine mammary tumour xenografts. The dosage chosen on the basis of pre-clinical and phase I studies was 700 mg/m2 given orally once daily for 14 days, with treatments being repeated every 3 weeks. There was no response. All patients experienced at least grade 1 anaemia, and two patients developed symptomatic methaemoglobinaemia. Two patients developed grade 4 rises in serum liver-function values along with histological changes consistent with drug-induced toxicity. The mean plasma concentrations of 176 μg/ml were lower than the levels required to exert anti-tumour effect in the mouse model.
We outline how research into predictors of literacy underpins the development of increasingly acc... more We outline how research into predictors of literacy underpins the development of increasingly accurate and informative assessments. We report three studies that emphasize the crucial role of speech and auditory skills on literacy development throughout primary and secondary school. Our first study addresses the effects of early childhood middle ear infections, the potential consequences for speech processing difficulties and the impact on early literacy development. Our second study outlines how speech and auditory skills are crucially related to early literacy in normally developing readers, whereas other skills such as motor, memory and IQ are only indirectly related. Our third study outlines the on-going impact of phonological awareness on reading and wider academic achievement in secondaryschool pupils. Finally, we outline how teachers can use the current research to inform them about which assessments to conduct, and how to interpret the results.
