Nonlinear Nearfield Wave Propagation in an Endochronic Solid

Abstract : CTBT verification requires an understanding of the propagation of seismic phases over ... more Abstract : CTBT verification requires an understanding of the propagation of seismic phases over complex regional paths which cut across major structural boundaries. The computation of synthetic seismograms by finite difference methods plays an important role in developing such understanding. In order for synthetic seismograms to be realistic, the models must account not only for regional elastic structure of the path, but also for anelastic losses. In addition, high amplitudes near the source require that numerical models take account of nonlinearity. Heretofore, 3D finite difference simulations have generally neglected' attenuation, due in large part to the onerous storage requirements entailed by realistic seismic Q models. We describe a novel solution to this problem which we call memory-variable coarse-graining. The coarse-graining method leads to an order of magnitude reduction in computer storage requirements for anelastic memory variables. We then develop and demonstrate a method for modeling nonlinear wave propagation in rock under conditions of intermediate strain, defined as strain levels below the threshold for failure and damage, but above the threshold for onset nonlinear response. The resulting model reproduces the stress-strain behavior of rock in this strain regime, as measured in quasi-static laboratory tests, and is consistent with key features of laboratory tests, and is consistent with key features of laboratory wave propagation measurements.

Most importantly, lateral variation in conductivity often modifies the apparent resistivity by a factor of 2 or more. In such cases any one-dimensional inversion is meaningless. However, simple approximations, based on the same physical approximations used to derive these one-dimensional inversions, can account for the effects of lateral structure as well.

We modify the receiver-functions stacking technique known as velocity spectrum stacking (VSS) so ... more We modify the receiver-functions stacking technique known as velocity spectrum stacking (VSS) so as to estimate combinations of velocity model (V P and V S) and depth that stack the Ps conversion from upper-mantle discontinuities most coherently. We find that by estimating the differences in the depths to the 660 and 410 km discontinuities using velocities that maximize the stacked amplitudes of P410s and P660s phases we can estimate the thickness of the transition zone more accurately than the depths to either of these discontinuities. We present two examples indicating that the transition zone beneath Obninsk, Russia, is 252±6 km thick and that beneath Pasadena, California, is only 220±6 km thick.

Rayleigh-type Lg propagating in a laterally homogeneous continental crust can be synthesized by a... more Rayleigh-type Lg propagating in a laterally homogeneous continental crust can be synthesized by adding only a few overtones at periods greater than 2 sec. Under minimal assumptions, we show that wavenumber analysis of Lg recorded on a several hundred kilometers long linear array of 10 stations allow us to isolate the different overtones, providing a tool to study crustal structures and excitation of the overtones at the source. In this first paper, we use synthetic Lg seismograms to investigate the applicability of a time-frequency-wavenumber analysis technique (UC diagram algorithm) to realistic arrays of stations. The behavior of the algorithm in the presence of lateral heterogeneities is studied numerically by introducing either random or coherent phase perturbations. Sources such as undergroung nuclear explosions and strong shallow earthquakes causing large verti... more Sources such as undergroung nuclear explosions and strong shallow earthquakes causing large vertical near-field displacement of the earth’s surface are known to excite atmospheric acoustic and gravity waves that propagate upward in the atmosphere. At ionospheric altitudes these waves are coupled to ionospheric gravity waves and induce variations in the ionospheric electron density. In this work, we used Global Positioning System (GPS) data and identify such an ionospheric perturbation after the January 17, 1994, Northridge earthquake (California, USA). We show that the Global Positioning System (GPS) is a valuable tool for detecting ionospheric perturbations and therefore has the potential for contributing to nuclear test discrimination.
