The success of IBSE, and the resulting development of inquiry skills in particular, can be enhanced by various factors. This study is focused on the synergetic effect of the implementation of IBSE through well-designed inquiry activities across STEM-related disciplines, enhanced by digital technologies and formative assessment tools, delivered by teachers educated in this field. The corresponding research based on a quasi-experimental design evaluated the effect on the development of inquiry skills that were identified before and after a period of consistent implementation of IBSE, using a written test of inquiry skills as the main research instrument. The research findings on the sample of 2307 upper secondary school students confirmed a low initial level of inquiry skills, ho...

The development of artificial intelligence systems in Slovakia is an important key for innovations in the field of healthcare, digitalization of industry, agriculture, but also other sectors of the Slovak economy. Extending the implementation of activities within the National Project IT Academy – Education for 21st Century by the area of Artificial Intelligence was important in order to provide the educational and training possibilities for university students, to innovate their preparation for employment in the IT sector and to improve their position regarding the information society. In this paper, we present the position of artificial intelligence within the National Project IT Academy – Education for 21st Century. We introduce the basic description of deep learning methods and their applications. Moreover, we present our two educational case studies regarding the applications of deep learning methods in the field of human activity recognition and in the segmentation of electrocardiogram recordings, which represent the examples of outputs of National Project IT Academy – Education for 21st Century.

Innovation of learning, as a part of School Education Programs, is aimed to update content, methods and forms of teaching mathematics, informatics, science subjects and professional subjects towards a consistent and meaningful implementation of ICT tools for education. A model of a special class that focuses on informatics, especially in grammar schools is created. Its part includes the formation of eight new courses for these classes. Two new motivational subjects are created: Informatics in Natural Sciences and Mathematics and Internet of Things. These subjects should guide pupils of secondary schools to pursue university study of computer science programs and ease search of employment in IT sector.

Large effort has been recently put into the implementation of inquiry-based science education. In this research, the current level of development of selected inquiry skills has been monitored and analysed. For this purpose, a multiple-choice test of selected inquiry skills was designed. The tested skills involve formulating hypothesis, designing experiment, transforming results into tables and graphs, determining relationships between variables based on tables and graphs and identifying possible sources of errors. The test was implemented across several thousands of upper secondary school students. The inquiry skills´ test results revealed significant lack of their development. The paper describes the test design as well as it analyses and interpret the test results.

We have seen a growing interest of using Python in programming at our secondary schools during the past six years. However, the transition from using the still prevalent Pascal to Python is often only formal, regardless of the language specifics of Python. In addition, teaching programming is oriented primarily to mastering language constructions. In the frame of the National project IT Academy we have focused on inquiry-based programming teaching. In our teaching and learning materials we exploit the 5E learning cycle. Firstly, pupils are engaged in a topic, then they explore a topic and give explanation for their findings, then elaborate on their learning and finally are evaluated. Their learning is not focused just on acquiring skills and experience using suitable Python commands and data structures, but also on using various problem solving strategies. The paper presents examples of teaching materials and interesting findings and comments from pilot teachers.

The main goal of IBSE is not only conceptual understanding but also development of students’ skills to conduct inquiry and evaluate gained results. The presented research is aimed at diagnosing the current status of selected inquiry skills’ development of high school students. Based on the existing tests and the inventory of inquiry skills a test of inquiry skills was developed. The test items that intend to assess the level of the skills to design experiment (identify variables and Scientia in educatione 48 7(2), 2016, p. 48–70 their relationship), transform results into graph, determine relationships, identify possible sources of errors and defend results and form arguments, are situated in the context of mathematics, physics or informatics. We submitted a report and the corresponding concept lattice to each in- dividual teacher and explored their additional feedback. In addition, we formulate the general observations and present the feasible set of tasks and objectives of an array data structure. The first activity is oriented on discovering and understanding the basic principles and rules of computer communication carried out by pupils themselves. The aim is to lead pupils to discover the encoded message within transmitted information (the structure of TCP/IP packet) and to realize the significance and importance of communication protocols. The second activity is oriented on discovering and devising the principles of information encoding; the code length dependence on the quantity of states, unambiguous encoding, the use of n-ary trees in encoding, etc.

The competition is assigned for pupils aged 10 to 15. It runs in two categories: PROFÍK (pupils aged 10 to 11) and EXPERT (pupils aged 12 to 15). The main aims of the competition are encouraging youngsters to solve interesting algorithmic problems, to improve their programming skills and mathematical thinking. Problems, which the competitors solve, are oriented to Programming, ALgorithms and Mathematics (PALMA). One year of competition composes of four bouts. Each bout consists of six problems. Problems from 1 to 4 are for teams in PROFÍK category, problems from 3 to 6 are for teams in EXPERT category. Students of PROFÍK category can solve the problems in EXPERT category, but it is not possible vice versa. Before and during the competition bouts students can study and use resources we have published on website of this competition. Students work on their own or in pairs. We have created the authorized area in LMS Moodle where students have an access to discussion forums, assignments of problems for particular bouts, chats and questionnaires. The competitors also deliver their solutions of problems in limited time and they can find there the evaluation of their solutions with comments written by organizers after current bout. In the paper we describe objectives of the competition in the field of improving competitors'programming skills, algorithmic and mathematical thinking and we also show how we cover the objectives by selected collection of problems. In the frame of the competition we would like also to develop knowledge in other areas (biology, geography, history and sports), aesthetics, creativity, pleasure feeling, EU citizenship, exactness etc. For better illustration of competitions problem types, their formulation, authorial solution, competitors' train of thought and their solution, typical misconceptions etc. we analyse and describe pupils' solutions of 6 selected problems (Kingdom of letters, Treasure Island, Pyramid, A drone bee and its (n x grand) parents, Snowflake , Flags of EU countries). In future we intend to improve learning materials, evaluation tools for whole competition progress and also prepare on-line course for teachers focused on methodology of programming.
