During this age rational thought and logical reasoning was given a lot of importance. It is a period of wisdom and scientific thought. The ability to think and reason was given a lot of importance. It is also known as the Augustine Age or the New Classical Age. The English writers of this age used to imitate the classical roman writers who were writing during the reign of King Augustus, therefore it is called the Augustine age and Neoclassical age and it is called the age of pope because Alexander Pope was a major writer of this period.

The restoration age is also called the age of the Dryden as john Dryden is the most important writer of this age. Before the Restoration age, there was the Common Wealth Period ruled by Oliver Cromwell. With the death of King Charles I, monarchy was abolished. His son, Charles II was defeated by Cromwell and fled to France. The Royalists always supported monarchy. When Oliver Cromwell died and his son, Richard Cromwell became the new Lord Protector, Charles II defeated him easily as Richard lacked the skills of his father. Charles II was restored to the throne. Major Historical And Political Events Of The Restoration Age: As soon as Charles II was restored to the throne, he lifted the theater ban in 1660. There was the establishment of a royal society in the restoration age to promote rational enquiry, research and development of science. Reasoning and logic, these were given a lot of importance.
