One of the interesting problems in the studies of Homer's language is the language of gods, a... more One of the interesting problems in the studies of Homer's language is the language of gods, a notion encountered in his epic. According to the mythic tradition, Old Greeks believed that gods spoke a language different from that of ordinary mortals. Of course, people treated this language with special esteem and respect. Such an opinion is clearly expressed in Plato's Cratylus, where Socrates says: oƒ ge qeoˆ kaloasin prOj o¸qOthta ¥per Ÿsti fUsei NnOmata ("Gods must clearly be supposed to call things by their right and natural names").
