The Acculturative Stress Experience of International Students: Acculturative Stress Experience of Chinese and Indonesian International Students

This is a longitudinal work aiming to ascertain the influence of ethnic identity, daily hassles, ... more This is a longitudinal work aiming to ascertain the influence of ethnic identity, daily hassles, social network, coping strategies, English language proficiency, self rating of health and demographic variables on levels of acculturative stress and overall distress experienced by international students. Students from China and Indonesia completed measures on the above constructs at the entry level and four and eight months after entering Australia and University. A similar group of Local Australian students was recruited to participate for comparison purposes. This study supported the stress and coping model, confirming that sojourners experienced moderate to high levels of stress from their initial interaction with the host society. These findings refuted the traditional U-curve assumption of culture shock which argues that sojourners go through honeymoon, depression and readjustment phases of adjustment. Overall, high daily hassles and acculturative stress were the strongest predictors of high levels of distress. Higher avoidance and self-blame coping strategies were strong predictors of high distress across the three waves of assessment

Recovery from psychosis is a personalised process due to the unique nature of the lived experiences of these individuals. Although numerous research have been conducted, there exists a research gap in taking into consideration the perspectives of practitioners in treating the illness. This study aimed to identify the perspectives of psychologists on the impact of interpersonal and intrapersonal factors that impact recovery from psychosis. Five participants were interviewed to qualitatively explore this utilising Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Findings suggested that recovery from psychosis can occur on four different dimensions; Behavioural, Insight, Cognitive, and Social Recovery. Evidence in the last decades in emerging economies, shows that public sector had a predominant role in the course of monetary and exchange rate policies. The objective of this document is to analyze the interaction between fiscal policy and monetary policy in the context of MERCOSUR (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay) and associated countries (Chile, Peru and Bolivia), using the results of a questionnaire sent to the central banks of these countries. Vet. e Zootec. 2014 set.; 21(3): 440-450. 441 present study were to isolate and identify the microbiota found on stainless steel surfaces of exam and procedure tables of the small animal ward of a veterinary teaching hospital, on which decontamination (disinfection without prior cleaning) is carried out on a routine basis, and to check in vitro inactivation by chemical disinfectants. Fifteen collections in three days of different months, we proceeded with swabs rolled over the surfaces of which were isolated coagulase-positive and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp., Sphingomonas paucimobilis, (non-group D) Streptococcus spp., Enterobacter spp., Acinetobacter Iwoffii, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas spp., Micrococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., non-fermenting coccobacilli, Bacillus spp., Citrobacter spp. and Candida guilliermondii. The inactivation capacity of peracetic acid, iodophor, sodium hypochlorite, quaternary ammonium, synthetic phenol, chlorhexidine and alcohol was assessed. The dilution method by microbial suspension test was performed using an experimental design consisting of three pools of bacteria (one per collection day) and a yeast culture at three disinfectant concentrations at 1, 5 and 10 minutes. All disinfectants inactivate all microorganisms, with quaternary ammonium, synthetic phenol, chlorhexidine and alcohol inactivated at lower concentration and contact times. It may be concluded that microorganisms – many of them deleterious to human and animal health – could be isolated from all of the sampled surfaces; the in vitro tests showed that all of the assessed chemicals can be used to inactivate the isolates; decontamination, as a unique hygiene routine procedure used on surfaces in direct contact with health professionals and patients, did not seem to safely protect the health of animals and health professionals.

Effectiveness of Policies on Reducing Exposure to Ionizing Radiation From Medical Imaging: A Systematic Review

Purpose: The use of medical imaging has expanded greatly in the past three decades, raising conce... more Purpose: The use of medical imaging has expanded greatly in the past three decades, raising concern about potential unwanted carcinogenic harms associated with exposure to ionizing radiation among patients. This study summarizes evidence of efficacy of interventions that have prompted policies, and structural-level interventions aimed at reducing radiation dose and risk of cancer, especially among women. Methods: Using standard terms, we conducted searches in MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science, and de-duplicated retrieved citations. We hand-searched the reference section of eligible studies and contacted radiology experts to identify studies missed from electronic searches. Two reviewers screened retrieved citations based on predefined eligibility criteria, to identify relevant studies, extract key information from each, rate the quality of evidence, and summarize data in tabular and graphical format. Results: From a total of 1,543 unique citations identified from all sources, 16 were included for data extraction. Half of the studies focused on reduction of ionizing exposure from CT, and half on x-ray or fluoroscopy. Identified interventions were broadly categorized as: policy or structural intervention (two; 13%); multipronged (four; 25%); dose-feedback system (five; 31%); provision of training (four; 25%); and quality-control audit (one; 6%). In general, multipronged programs had a higher range for dose reduction (22%-74%), followed by policy/ structural interventions (37%-50%). Conclusions: Existing evidence on the effectiveness of policies aimed at reducing patient radiation dose is disperse and low in quality. Compared with other approaches, multipronged efforts may offer more patient protection.

Wavelet analysis of the LF radio signals collected by the European VLF/LF network from July 2009 to April 2011

In 2008, a radio receiver that works in very low frequency (VLF; 20-60 kHz) and LF (150-300 kHz) ... more In 2008, a radio receiver that works in very low frequency (VLF; 20-60 kHz) and LF (150-300 kHz) bands was developed by an Italian factory. The receiver can monitor 10 frequencies distributed in these bands, with the measurement for each of them of the electric field intensity. Since 2009, to date, six of these radio receivers have been installed throughout Europe to establish a 'European VLF/LF Network'. At present, two of these are into operation in Italy, and the remaining four are located in Greece, Turkey, Portugal and Romania. For the present study, the LF radio data collected over about two years were analysed. At first, the daytime data and the night-time data were separated for each radio signal. Taking into account that the LF signals are characterized by ground-wave and sky-wave propagation modes, the daytime data are related to the ground wave and the night-time data to the sky wave. In this framework, the effects of solar activity and storm activity were defined in the different trends. Then, the earthquakes with M ≥5.0 that occurred over the same period were selected, as those located in a 300-km radius around each receiver/transmitter and within the 5th Fresnel zone related to each transmitter-receiver path. Where possible, the wavelet analysis was applied on the time series of the radio signal intensity, and some anomalies related to previous earthquakes were revealed. Except for some doubt in one case, success appears to have been obtained in all of the cases related to the 300 km circles in for the ground waves and the sky waves. For the Fresnel cases, success in two cases and one failure were seen in analysing the sky waves. The failure occurred in August/September, and might be related to the disturbed conditions of the ionosphere in summer.
