Thus, 72 Mangalarga Marchador foals (ages ranged from 1-12 mo) were randomly selected and divided into 12 age groups (n=6 per group), evaluated monthly. The thickness of the Longissimus dorsi (LD) and rump fat (RF) were determined through an ultrasound performed on each foal’s left side. Such parameters were used to calculate the percentage of body fat (BF), fat mass (FM), and fat-free mass (FFM). Morphometric measurements were taken on the foal’s right side using a tape measure and a hypsometer. Blood samples were collected for determinations of total proteins, albumin, triglycerides, cholesterol, urea, creatinine, and glucose. Morphometric measurements, the thickness of the LD and RF, weight, BF, FM, and FFM showed differences between age groups (P<0.001)....

We aimed to investigate the effects of supplementation with L-glutamine and L-glutamic acid for 21 days in the preoperative and postoperative outcomes of bitches that underwent ovariohysterectomy (OHE) due to pyometra. Fourteen bitches with pyometra were randomly assigned into two groups after OHE: the supplemented group (G-GLN, n = 9) and control group (G-CON, n = 5). Body score data and venous blood samples were collected. Hematological parameters, serum concentrations of glutamine (Gln), glutamate, alanine (Ala), and other energy and protein metabolism biomarkers were analyzed before and at 3, 7, 14, and 21 days after surgery. Data obtained were subjected to two-way analysis of variance, and significant (P < 0.05) means were compared using the Tukey test. Supplementation showed significantly (P < 0.05) higher serum Gln and Ala concentrations than that under control diet. Body scores under supplementation significantly (P < 0.05) improved. There were significant (P < 0.05) changes in triglycerides, fibrinogen, albumin, creatinine, and uric acid concentrations between phases. There was also a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in leukocytes with supplementation. Significant changes were also observed in platelets (P < 0.05), with an increase in G-GLN compared with G-CON. The establishment of a conventional therapy involving the supplementation of the diet of postoperative bitches with L-glutamine and L-glutamic acid promoted an increase in the serum levels of Gln and Ala and a reduction of inflammation, lipolysis, and muscle breakdown, thus favoring the improvement of the body score.

Few data are reported in the literature for plasma amino acid levels in equine athletes, mainly glutamine (Gln), glutamate (Glu), and alanine (Ala). The aim of this study was to determine the plasmatic Gln, Glu, and Ala concentrations in athlete horses subjected to field simulations of Vaquejada and 3-barrel racing. Twenty-three animals were used, trained, and conditioned, and grouped according to their activity and function as follows: Vaquejada pull horses (G-PUX; n = 12), Vaquejada helper horses (G-AUX; n = 6), and -barrel horses (G-3TB; n = 5). All were from the same training center with the same food management, receiving commercial concentrate divided equally into two meals, water, mineralized salt, and fresh grass ad libitum. Blood samples were collected after overnight fasting by jugular venipuncture with vacuum collection tubes containing heparin and were immediately ...

The samples were then sent to a laboratory for analysis. Results were analyzed by ANOVA, with P set at 5%. Differences between means were identified using Tukey’s test at 5 %. The concentration of P and Cl decreased significantly after blood donation (P < 0.05), while there was no change in [Ca] and [Mg]. It is concluded that donating blood leads to changes in mineral biomarkers, but these changes are not capable of causing harm to the animal’s health.

However, in some situations, its degradation can be higher than its production. For example, during a period of lactation or disease, there is an increase in the consumption of Arg. In this case, endogenous production is not enough for the animal’s demands. Indeed, Arg supplementation in animals has several benefits for the animal’s body, such as the increase of angiogenesis, improvements in immunity and the reproductive system, as well as the stimulation of lactogenesis. During the early phase of growth, a deficiency of Arg could cause a reduction in the growth rate and metabolic activity of animals. Therefore, this amino acid is considered essential in some phases of the life of animals. However, very few studies of the supplementation of this amino acid in horses have been carried out. The aim of the present study was to characterize the effects of supplementing lactating mares and their f...

It has been shown that animals originated by new reproductive technology can have compromised growth in extreme conditions, however there are still only a few researches on the influence of embryo transfer over lactating foals under different raising methods. Due to the lack of studies on ET products development and the need to understand the process and it’s relate with lactating foal’s growth, the aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the embryo transfer and natural mate over the newborn foals.Materials, Methods & Results: From a group of 20 mares, 20 Quarter Horse lactating foals were used (10 natural matting + 10 embryo transfer). The mares weren’t given any concentrate feed during whole gestation and lactation. Foals were kept with the mare, however was used creep feeding to give commercial feed ad libitum. T...

Mares lose lean body mass during lactation, when plasma and milk Gln levels change significantly. However, supplementation with Gln combined with other amino acids may not alter equine plasma Gln levels. The work reported here was designed to test the hypothesis that supplementation with a mixture of glutamine and glutamate (AminoGut) alters blood and milk free glutamine and glutamate levels in pasture-fed lactating mares.Materials, Methods & Results: This study involved 31 multiparous Quarter Horse mares, which were divided into three groups immediately postpartum, as follows: G-CON (n = 19); G-50 g supplemented with 50 g of Gln + Glu plus 200 g of concentrate (n = 6); and G-100 g, supplemented with 100 g of Gln + Glu plus 200 g of conce...

To cover their nutrient requirements, feed manufacturers have developed oil-rich dietary supplements and concentrates. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of increasing the density of dietary fats in the feed of 16 Campolina horses undergoing intense gaited training. The training schedule consisted of training 4 × a week: 3 days riding for 60 min (10' warm-up, 40' doing marcha gait, and 10' cool down, and 1 day walking for 90'). The horses were divided in two groups: control and supplemented. The dietary supplementation was isocaloric, with the control group receiving an ordinary concentrate (3.5% fat) and the supplemented group fed 1.0 kg of the supplement (18% fat) plus the ordinary concentrate. Both groups had free access to fresh grass, salt and water. Blood samples were collected prior to and after 4 and 8 weeks of supplem...

Work has been carried out to determine the HR, velocity (V) and exercise time for pull and helper horses submitted to the Vaquejada simulation test (VST). The test was used on 70 Quarter Horses that had trained and competed for more than 6 months. The VST consists of two horses, a puller and a helper, and a bull, all running on a soft sand track. A race cycle consists of three runs with the bull. Pull horses run one cycle and helper horses run two cycles. A Polar V800-GPS HR monitor for equines was used to measure several parameters: time, V and HR. The results were analysed by ANOVA and a Tukey test with P set at 5%. It was shown that pull horses developed an HRmax of ~200 bpm and an HRmin ~110 bpm, both higher than the helper horses (P<0.05). However, the HRmed of pull horses (~150 bpm) and helper horse...

Little research has focused on GLN supplementation for horses, but GLN levels in this species are known to decline after exercise and during lactation. Under physiological conditions, the body produces Gln in sufficient quantities for general metabolism, and a small part of this amino acid comes from dietary protein. Little research has so far focused on equine dietary supplementation with free glutamine or combined with other amino acids during catabolic states or in highly stressful situations. This research was conducted to evaluate the effects of equine dietary supplementation using a combination of glutamine and glutamate. Materials, Methods & Results: The study involved four Arabian mares, not in training (~380 kg; ~12 years old) and four treatments (control, and inclusions of 1, 2 and 4% of GLN+GLU) in a Latin square model. A 7-day washout period was established between each phase. Fifty percent of ...

However, this activity has been the subject of questions about well-being involving the environmental and mental comfort conditions offered to equine and cattle interactions. It is necessary to perform technical evaluations of the cattle involved on the basis of scientific study to better understand the processes of sport and, with this, promote their evolution on good welfare practices in the 21 st century. Therefore, to test the hypothesis that the use of the official rules of the vaquejada where cattle use a protective harness on the tail protects the cattle's tail from injuries in this region that compromise health. Before, during and after races, a study was developed that aimed to perform a general and radiological clinical evaluation in the proximal coccygeal region in cattle that ran in a modern cattle stall. Forty male bovines were evaluated (average: 2 year-old and 420 kg). Oxen were subjected to clinical and radiological examination before and after racing with official rules. Results of the clinical and radiological evaluations performed by veterinarians, did not observe clinical occurrences before and after the races in the 40 cattle evaluated. The increase in heart and respiratory rates was a reflection of temporary management stressors, as the animals returned to the feeding/rumination/interaction pattern after running in the rest pen. The radiographic findings in the tail, represented by the reduction of the intervertebral space and areas of subcutaneous radiolucency, suggest technical artifacts derived from the manipulation of the tail for proper positioning to perform the tests in the condition of retention in the corral.
