Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among military personnel is an issue that receives a large amount of attention, particularly in the context of operational deployment in relation to the experience of potentially traumatic events (e.g., Adler et al., 2008). A recent meta-analysis of military personnel investigating PTSD following deployment to the Iraq and Afghanistan conflict identified 49 papers emerging between 1991 and 2012 (Hines, et al., 2014). Yet, there is a dearth of meta-analysis investigating the role the job-related demands and resources play in relation to deployment related-outcomes. Personnel serving in deployment contexts also experience other demands, such as sleep disruption, barriers to fulfilling goals, ethical challenges (Kok, Herrell, Grossman, West, & Wilk, 2016; McCauley, Liebling-Kalifani, & Hughes, 2012). Other job-related demands also play a role in individual vulnerability to PTS...

Descriptive analysis of the survey ( n = 144) highlighted that most participants were in the normal range for mental health and wellbeing; however, identifying mental ill-health in children, access to resources and awareness of support services were areas where participants were less likely to feel confident or capable. In the interviews ( n = 14), three themes were identified in the interviews for the first research question (including the central role of the FDC educator, lack of training and resources and limited professional support) and three themes were identified for the second research question (the importance of mental health for educators, being a small business owner and connecting with other educators). The results highlighted a need for additional support and resources for educators ...

Questions are being asked that encompass a range of issues from examiner selection through to the rigour and credibility of assessment procedures. Many commentators have pointed out that doctoral examination, and doctoral study generally, is an exceedingly complex phenomenon that has yet to be subject of sustained and systematic research.

Response Ability is the pre-service component of this activity, and its purpose is to support tertiary education institutions in their training of education and care professionals. Its scope encompasses early childhood, primary, and secondary teacher training in university and vocational education. Response Ability aims to enable tertiary educators (e.g. lecturers, tutors, and course coordinators) to raise awareness and build the capacity of the future teaching workforce. Response Ability is designed to firstly empower teacher educators and students; secondly to build capacity in their professional capabilities; and finally to transform the behaviour and culture of the university profession so that the inclusion of social and emotio...

The Response Ability initiative believes that it is just as valuable to look at what 'belonging' means for us individually and in our workplaces.

Unlike most other nations, however, the written report on the thesis is the only assessment that most Australian candidates are likely to receive. In the USA coursework provides a substantial component of assessment, while in the UK the viva voce is required. Although doctoral coursework is gaining ground in Australia, thesis examination remains the dominant form of assessment. Moreover the likelihood of moving to a viva is slim, especially as serious concerns about the credibility of the oral examination are emerging (Tinkler and Jackson 2001).

Depending on the content, a report about suicide can have either a negative (Werther-) or a positive (Papageno-) effect. Evidence-informed recommendations for the reporting of suicide in Australia are provided under the Mindframe initiative. The purpose of this paper is to assess the application of these recommendations in broadcasts associated with one of the largest national campaigns to promote suicide prevention, the R U OK? Day, a yearly campaign of the Australian suicide prevention charity R U OK? Design/methodology/approach The sample consisted of 112 (32 TV, 80 radio) Australian broadcasts discussing the R U OK? Day suicide prevention campaign during the month preceding the 2015 campaign and on the national R U OK? Day itself. Broadcasts were coded for medium (TV or radio), content (suicide focus, mental illness focus...

Abstract: Research has shown that training professionals in key areas and skills at base level (pre-service) provides the best opportunity to influence and prepare a skilled workforce. Professional teacher standards, expert opinion and research indicate that mental health promotion, mental ill-health prevention, early intervention (MHPPEI) is essential to the role of all teachers. This content should not be pigeon holed into discipline streams or units. Contrary to lay perceptions and out-dated notions of what teaching is; the capacity to promote mental health is essential to every aspect of teaching and every teacher. For example, the dynamic nature of student-teacher relationships is important to student wellbeing and academic outcomes. Students do...
