Celastrus paniculatus is commonly known as “Malkangani”, widely distributed in the Maldives, Aust... more Celastrus paniculatus is commonly known as “Malkangani”, widely distributed in the Maldives, Australia, China, Cambodia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Nepal, Thailand as well as in the Pacific Islands and all over India mainly Maharashtra, Orissa and Andaman and Nicobar group of Islands on an altitude of 1800m. It climbs up to over 10m. The leaves are ovate or elliptic in shape with dentate margin. Seeds are ellipsoid or ovoid, yellowish-brown in color and grow inside the capsules. Celastrus paniculatus (Malkangni) is used in Ayurveda as a nervine tonic, tranquilizer and diuretic and in rheumatism, gout, leprosy and asthma. Different Parts of Celastrus paniculatus after extraction and fractionation give different active constituents such as sesquiterpene esters-malkanguinol, malkangunin, sesquiterpene alkaloids-celapanin, celapanigin, alkaloids-celastrine, paniculatine, fatty acids-oleic acid, palmittic acid, linoleic acid and stearic acid, crystalline substance tetracasanol and sterol. Mixed micellar behavior of a series of m-2-m cationic gemini surfactants (where m = 10, 12 and 14... more Mixed micellar behavior of a series of m-2-m cationic gemini surfactants (where m = 10, 12 and 14) with monomeric surfactants (dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide, tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide) has been studied in aqueous and in aqueous n-propanol, n-butanol, tertiary butanol, propylene glycol and glycerol solutions using conductivity, surface tension, viscosity and dynamic light scattering techniques at 298.15, 308.15 and 318.15 K, respectively. In mixtures of 10-2-10 with monomeric surfactants, the synergistic interactions increase with the chain length of monomeric surfactants whereas the mixtures with 12-2-12 and 14-2-14 exhibit the opposite trends. However, the synergistic interactions decrease with the increase in temperature of all the mixtures. The thermodynamic and surface parameters have been evaluated and the influence of the variations in hydrophobic chain length of the surfactants and the type of the co-solvent on these parameters has been discussed. The hydrodynamic diameter increases with the chain length of the surfactants.
Anaerobic co-digestion is widely adopted to enhance process efficacy by balancing the C/N ratio o... more Anaerobic co-digestion is widely adopted to enhance process efficacy by balancing the C/N ratio of the feedstock while converting organic wastes to biomethane. Goat manure (GM) and cotton gin trash (CGT) were anaerobically co-digested in triplicate batch bioreactors. The process was optimized and evaluated utilizing mathematical equations. The liquid fraction of the digestate was analyzed for nitrate and phosphate. The co-digestions with 10 and 20% CGT having the C/N ratios of 17.7 and 19.8 yielded the highest and statistically similar 261.4 ± 4.8 and 262.6 ± 4.2 mL/gvs biomethane, respectively. The biodegradability (BD) of GM and CGT was 94.5 ± 2.7 and 37.6 ± 0.8%, respectively. The BD decreased proportionally with an increase in CGT percentage. The co-digestion having 10% CGT yielded 80–90% of biomethane in 26–39 d. The modified Gompertz model-predicted and experimental biomethane values were similar. Citrus fruits include orange, tangerine, lime, lemon, sour orange and grapefruit. Citrus fruits are not only used for table purposes, but also in processing industries to make value added products such as marmalade, jams, juice, jellies, etc. which leads to the generation of waste into peel (rind) and seeds. The main fruit waste i.e. peels and seeds. The peel (skin) can be used for the preparation of sweets (candies). The use of citrus peel will not only improve the utility, but also serve to reduce the pollution load on the environment. It is nutritionally fortified with ascorbic acid, vitamin B, calcium, phosphorus, and other beneficial compounds essential for overall health. Citrus peels are enriched with pectin, cellulose and hemicelluloses, bioactive compounds and other compounds beneficial to health. Citrate and tartarate based food preservatives can be used to enhance the emulsifying properties ... more Citrate and tartarate based food preservatives can be used to enhance the emulsifying properties of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) based micellar system and thus making it appropriate for food applications. Exploration of interactions between the two species is the key constraint for execution of such ideas. In this work various micellar and thermodynamic parameters of SDS like critical micellar concentration (CMC), standard Gibbs free energy of micellization (DG 0 mic.) etc. have been calculated in different concentrations of disodium tartarate (DST) and trisodium citrate (TSC) in the temperature range (288.15-318.15) K from the conductivity and surface tension measurements. The parameters obtained from these studies reveal the competitive nature of both the additives with SDS for available positions at the air/water interface. TSC is found to be more effective additive in order to make SDS micellar system better for its potential applications as food emulsifier.
