To reach a goal faster and more effectively, sports teams have learned that individuals working together is more efficient and productive than working separately. Over the past twenty years, organizations have also begun to implement team-centered environments. With the growth of team culture, there is an increasing need for leaders who can build effective teams. Effective teams can give organizations a great competitive edge in their industry. By examining the current literature on leading and building effective teams, leaders can understand the definition of an effective team, strategies that build an effective team and the characteristics of leaders who effectively build productive teams. This paper plans to review the current literature on leading and building effective teams. The research question proposed in this research paper focuses on building effective teams: RQ1: What specific strategies build the most effective organizational teams? The second research concentrates on the impact of leadership and teams: RQ2: What leadership characteristics impact the development of effective teams? This review of the current literature on effective teams can help leaders and managers build effective teams by understanding team effectiveness, strategic methods used in team development as well as the impact that leaders have on the success of teams. When the dynamics of effective teams is analyzed, conclusions can be drawn that show the characteristics of leaders, strategies and teams that build effectiveness. Conceptual Framework In order to thoroughly examine effective teams, a theoretical framework is provided in this review of the literature to supply a foundation of team development. First, this review will share the definition of a team, an effective team and the features of an effective team. Then, an analysis of building effective teams is explored sharing the current literature on the development of team effectiveness. Next, a synthesis is provided on the impact of leadership and the characteristics of leaders of effective teams. Finally, implications are drawn on leading and building effective teams.
