A group of researchers relate the elevated number of estrogen receptors in breast cancer samples to the over-production of PSA in this type of cancer. The study aimed to determine the plasma PSA level of the participants of the study as a new biomarker for the primary diagnosis of breast cancer. Materials & Methods: Employing a historical cohort design, the study was conducted on 95 patients with breast masses. The participants were assigned to malignant (n=43) and benign (n=40) groups. Male participants and those undergoing a recent hormone therapy were excluded from the study. Independent-samples t-test and Fishers exact test were used to analyze the data using SPSS (Version 20). Resuls: Findings of the study indicated the sensitivity and specificity of the plasma PSA level in patients with breast cancer...

Juvenile fibroadenoma accounts for only 4% of total fibroadenomas. Moreover, the incidence of giant juvenile fibroadenoma is found to be only 0.5% of all fibroadenomas. A 15-year-old woman at the 12th week of gestation was referred to the Shahid Sadoughi Hospital, Yazd, Iran because of a mass in the right breast from one year ago. On Physical examination and imaging, a large mass was found in her right breast. Fine needle aspiration biopsy reported fibroadenoma. Mass enucleation and breast reconstruction were performed. Pathologic examination confirmed a giant fibroadenoma. No serious complications were reported during one-month follow up. The most highlighted point of this presentation was giant size of juvenile fibroadenoma in a pregnant woman. This case report shows that large breast tumors in the adolescent age group can be benign and breast-conserving surgery should be considered in such cases.

Several studies have hitherto been conducted toward decreasing the BL that occurs during and after the operation. This study has been designed and executed with the objective of determining and comparing the effectiveness of tranexamic acid (TA) medication on controlling BL during and after total thyroidectomy. Materials and Methods: This study was carried out as a double-blind clinical trial on 83 patients affected with benign and malignant pathologies which were candidates for total thyroidectomy surgical operation, referred to the surgery department of Shahid Rahnemoun Hospital in Yazd, Iran, during a 1-year period. Patients were randomly divided into two groups including TA recipients, for which 20 mg/kg of TA was diluted to 20 cc with normal saline before surgery, and the control group which did not receive TA. The amount of BL during surgery was measured based on the blood gas value at the time of operation and post-surgery BL was measured based on the amount of blood collected in the Hemovac drain. The patients' hemoglobin was also measured and recorded before surgery and 24 h after surgery. Results: Among the 83 studied patients, 42 patients received TA, whereas the other 41 did not receive this medication. BL during surgery in the TA receiving group was significantly less than the control group (P = 0.016). Post-operation BL in the TA receiving group was also less than the control group, although the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.5). Moreover, the decline of hemoglobin level 24 h after surgery was not significant in the TA receiving group and the control group. Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, TA significantly reduces the amount of BL during the surgical procedure of total thyroidectomy. TA also results in a non-significant reduction of post-operation BL, whereas the hemoglobin level is not affected by it.

However, the side effects and outcome of recovery from anesthesia of these drugs on ART have not been identified yet. Objective: This study aimed at investigating the side effects and hemodynamic effects of using thiopental sodium and propofal as well as effects of these drugs on pregnancy outcome in ART cycles. Materials and Methods: In this double blinded) randomized controlled trial, 90 woman candidate for ART were randomly divided into two groups. 47 patients received Propofol (2.5 mg/kg) and 43 patients received thiopental (5mg/kg) for anesthesia induction. The entry hemodynamic parameters of the patients were documented. During the anesthesia process, hemodynamic parameters were checked at five-minute intervals. Results: The results of the study showed a statistically significant difference between two groups in terms of their response to verbal stimulation (p<0.001), the normalization time of the rate and quality of breathing (p<0.001), nausea (p<0.001), and vomiting (p<0.001). Also, in comparison with the other group, all these parameters were better in Propofol group. There was found no significant difference between two groups in terms of other variables. Conclusion: Based on the findings of the study, Propofol has fewer known side effects. Vomiting and nausea as two known side effect of anesthesia are significantly lower in patients receiving Propofol than patients who received thiopental.

The diagnosis of this syndrome is often difficult and based on clinical criteria and family history. Many skin lesions are reported from the disease up to now and various and simultaneously skin lesions in this case is the main propose of this report. Case report: A 11-year-old male with cutaneous lesions on the right forearm, left elbow, and right knee was referred after a mild injury. Patient recalled history of similar lessions, delay in wound healing, easy bruising, and recurrent dislocation of wrist from childhood period. According to clinical manifestation, Ehlers-danlos syndrome was probable diagnosis for this patient. However due to the disavailability of specific diagnostic test in our country, there was no definite diagnosis. After sending biopsies of skin lesions to the pathology laboratory, spheroid nodule of forearm, organized hematoma in the elbow, and keratinous cyst in the right knee were diagnosed. Conclusion: Fat necrosis, traumatic hematoma, hernia of fat into the dermis with calcification and atrophic scars have been reported as various skin lesions in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Three synchronous skin lesions and perforated keratinous cyst with marked inflammatory of foreign body distinguished this case from other similar previous cases. This case is the first case of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome with mentioned cutaneous dermatologic manifestations in Iran.

Multiple drugs are used for the treatment of children with ADHD; however, their side effects and efficacy are not clearly known. This study was designed to evaluate and compare the therapeutic effects of two drugs, that is, omega-3 and methylphenidate hydrochloride (Ritalin(®)), used to treat patients with ADHD. In a randomized, placebo control clinical trial in Yazd, Iran, 85 ADHD children were divided into two experimental and one control groups. Thus, 29 subjects were treated with Ritalin(®), 28 subjects received omega-3, and the remaining 28 received placebo. The data collection tools used in this study consisted of the Conners' Parent Rating Scale and Teacher Rating Scale. The scores obtained from these questionnaires were analyzed using chi-square test and paired t-test in PASW Statistics. The average ag...

This study was designed to determine the rate of use of contraceptive methods and the risks. This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2010 in Tehran, Iran. Total sample size was 304 participants who all filled out a questionnaire which had two parts. Data were analyzed by SPSS. The results showed that age (p = 0.003), employment status (p = 0.001), number of children (p = 0.001), and marriage (p = 0.01), had a significant relation with type of contraceptive method while, education did not correlate with contraceptive methods. New and often younger couples with no experience about different contraceptive methods may tend to use natural methods because of their lack of knowledge of other techniques. Use of modern contraceptives early in marriage or even before marriage could be a good strategy.

Half of the world's population consists of women, who play important roles in cultural format... more Half of the world's population consists of women, who play important roles in cultural formation and education, maintain and promote households and their health, and consequently affect the community. In a general sense, women's health may be an important cornerstone for the formation of a healthy community. In developing countries, 67% of women work in the agriculture sector and produce 55% of the food products throughout the world. In East Asian countries, which have the highest level of cloth and furniture export, 74% of workers are women. Due to these considerations, we assessed women's health indicators in Iran. We reviewed health information from national health reports, including two national health surveys conducted in 1991 and 2009 with a sample size of 1/1,000 of the Iranian population, the 2000 Iran Demographic and Health Survey, and all published indices that were calculated in 2006 or later. The most important finding was that the maternal mortality rate dec...

For this purpose we compared these variables in 68 individuals: 34 patients with hypertension and 34 normal volunteers. The two groups were similar in terms of age, gender distribution, body mass index, and ratio of waist to hip girth. Furthermore, although four patients with hypertension satisfied the criteria for microalbuminuria, as compared to one normal volunteer, the urinary albumin excretion (UAE) rates were similar in the two groups (8.07 +/- 1.08 v 7.67 +/- 1.12 micrograms/min). Despite the similarities, both the plasma glucose and insulin responses to a 75 g oral glucose challenge were significantly higher (P < .01) in those with high blood pressure. In addition, the steady-state plasma glucose (SSPG) concentrations at the end of a 180 mi...
