An extensive examination of the external and internal morphological characters of the genus Nychi... more An extensive examination of the external and internal morphological characters of the genus Nychiodes shows that "Nychiodes" tyttha Prout, 1915 is incorrectly placed in this genus. The systematic position of this species was investigated by using a multigene analysis, including one mitochondrial and up to nine protein-coding nuclear gene regions, and morphological characters. These results support a re-classification of this species as Aphilopota tyttha, comb. nov. A re-description supported by illustrations of morphological characters for A. tyttha is provided.

For each master list, the rearing records are ordered under family, subfamily and sometimes tribe headings (in some cases we offer a superfamily instead of a family name where we were uncertain of the family placement). Three new species of Isoplenodia Prout, 1932 are described and illustrated from continental Afric... more Three new species of Isoplenodia Prout, 1932 are described and illustrated from continental Africa, expanding the taxonomic scope and known geographic distribution of this previously endemic, monotypic Madagascan genus of geometrid moths. The new species are: I. vidalensis Sihvonen & Staude sp. n., from eastern South Africa; I. kisubiensis Sihvonen & Staude sp. n., from southern Uganda; and I. arabukoensis Sihvonen & Staude sp. n., from southeastern Kenya, central Zimbabwe and southwestern Rwanda. The paucity of available data suggest that the African species may be associated with wet forest or marsh mosaic habitats. Adults and genitalia of all known Isoplenodia species are illustrated, and the systematic position of the genus in relation to other genera in the tribe Scopulini is discussed.

In this book, approximately 1,500 species of the region's moths – and most of their caterpillars – are illustrated with images of live specimens. A diagnosis based on visible characters is provided, also enabling the user to readily identify many closely related species not illustrated. Known host associations, habitat preferences, phenology and accurate distribution maps are provided for each species. As the only substantive and up-to-date guide to the rich moth fauna of the wider southern African region, this volume fills a gap in the natural history books of Africa. Furthermore, it includes data from citizen science project The Caterpillar Rearing Group to depict caterpillar stage and respective host plant/s for a sizeable proportion of the southern African moth fauna. Based on more than 270,000 location records, preferred habitats and point-based distribution maps are provided for the first time. A crucial addition to our understanding of the wildlife of the African continent.
