The effects of these protective colloids on colloidal, surface and film properties of latexes were examined. The effects of new protective colloid and comonomer ratios on the physicochemical and colloidal properties of latexes were investigated. The changes in homopolymer and copolymer latexes were determined by measuring viscosity, particle size, molecular weight (MW), molecular weight distribution (MWD), and surface tension. \( \bar{M}_{n} \) values of copolymer latexes were found to be lower than the MWs of the poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(butyl acrylate) homopolymers. In general, \( \bar{M}_{n} \) and \( \bar{M}_{\text{w}} \) values of copolymer latexes changed irregularly with increasing BuA ratio in the copolymer composition.

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(propylene glycol) of different molecular weights were used. The structures of these tri-block co-polymers were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR and ESI–MS analysis. Surface tension, foam height and foam destruction properties of these co-polymers were determined. Spectroscopic analysis confirmed that bonding of polyether to polysiloxane was successful and two types of different tri-block co-polymers were obtained. The anti-foaming efficiency of these co-polymers tended to increase with an increase in the hydrophilic character of the co-polymer chains. The synthesized tri-block co-polymers, which can be used as anti-foaming agents in paper-coating applications of poly(vinyl acetate-co-butyl acrylate) latexes, showed low surface tension values, fast liquid drainage and efficient foam destruction. PEG 200-b-PDMS-b-PEG 200 was determined to be the most efficient anti-foaming agent among all co-polymers synthesized.

In the experimental study, five different talc concentrations, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 wt %, were added to i-PP/EPDM (88/12) blends to produce ternary composites. The mechanical properties such as yield and tensile strengths, elongation at break, elasticity modulus, izod impact strength for notch tip radius of 1 mm, and hardness with and without heat treatments and thermal properties, such as melt flow index (MFI), of the ternary composites have been investigated. The annealing heat treatment was carried out at 100°C for holding time of 75 h. From the tensile test results, an increased trend for the yield and tensile strengths and elasticity modulus was seen for lower talc contents, while elongation at break showed a sharp decrease with the addition of talc. In the case of MFI, talc addition decreased the MFI of i-PP/EPDM blends. It was concluded that, taking into consideration, mechanical properties and annealing heat treatment, heat treatment has much more effect on higher yield and tensile strengths, elongation at break, elasticity modulus, impact strength, and hardness. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. These factors increase the importance of plastic and plastic-based coatings in industrial applications. In this study, an aluminum–silicon–polyester-based composite coating was applied by plasma-spraying processes with and without an intermediate bond coat (Ni–Al). The effects of the coating thickness, intermediate bond coat, and processes parameters on the microstructure and wear properties of the coating were studied experimentally. The wear properties of the coatings were determined according to ball-on-disk procedure. The microstructures of the coating were examined by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that the plasma-spraying current and thickness had a strong influence on the wear resistance and microstructural properties of the aluminum–silicon–polyester coating. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
