The aim of this work is to discuss the different physical scenarios in order to explain the meaning of the significant absorption feature present in the X-ray spectrum of 4U 1538−52. Using the last available calibrations, we discard the possibility that this feature is due to calibration, gain effects or be produced by the X-ray background or a dust region. Giving the energy resolution of the XMM-Newton telescope we could not establish if the line is formed in the atmosphere of the neutron star or by the dispersion of the stellar wind of the optical counterpart. We present a phase-resolved X-ray spectral and timing analysis of two pointed XMM–Newton observations. The first one took place during a normal state of the source, when it has a luminosity LX ∼ 1036 erg s−1. This observation covered orbital phases ϕ = 0.00–0.37, i.e. the egress from the eclipse. The egress light curve is highly structured, showing distinctive intervals. We argue that different intervals correspond to the emergence of different emitting structures. The light-curve analysis enables us to estimate the size of such structures around the compact star, the most conspicuous of which has a size ∼0.3R*, of the order of the Roche lobe radius. During the egress, the equivalent width of Fe emission lines, from highly ionized species, decreases as the X-ray continuum grows. On the other hand, the equivalent width of the Fe K α line, from near-neutral Fe, strengthens. This line is likely formed du...

First, we have selected some potential candidates from different X-ray catalogues. Then we have used the Virtual Observatory tools to search for optical and infrared point data sources that were coincident with the position of the X-ray source. In this work we present some examples of our ongoing programme showing the potential of the Virtual Observatory as a discovery tool.

We identify ≈ 350 stars, of which 214 were not included in Oosterhof’s catalogue. Our magnitude limit V = 16.5 allows us to reach early F spectral type and obtain very accurate fits to the ZAMS. We derive reddening values of E(b − y) = 0.44± 0.02 for h Persei and E(b−y) = 0.39±0.05 for χ Persei. From the ZAMS fitting, we derive distance moduli V0 −MV = 11.66± 0.20 and V0 −MV = 11.56± 0.20 for h and χ Persei respectively. These values are perfectly compatible with both clusters being placed at the same distance and having identical reddenings. The shift in the main-sequence turnoff and isochrone fitting, however, show that there is a significant age difference between both clusters, with the bulk of stars in h Persei being older than χ Persei. There is, however, a significant population of stars in h Persei which are younger than χ Persei. All this argues for at least three different epochs of s...
