For the first time, argan nut shell was characterized and assessed as a new potential feedstock for bioethanol production using a combination of mechanical and enzymatic pretreatment. Argan shell samples were first disintegrated using the Star Burst system, which involves a high-pressure water jet system. Then, the pretreated argan nut shell was subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis using Viscozyme L (30 FBGU/g). Afterwards, the fermentation of the hydrolysate by Saccharomyces cerevisiae was investigated. Argan nut shell, as a feedstock plentiful in carbohydrates, conferred a high yield of saccharification (90%) and an optimal ethanol bioconversion (45.25%) using Viscozyme L (30 FBGU/g) at 2%w/v of argan feedstock.

Central to the project of post-secularism is the integration of religious ways of being within a public arena shared by others who may practice different faiths, practice the same faith differently, or be non-religious in outlook. As a secular state within which Sunni Islam has played an increasingly public role, Turkey is a prime site for studying new configurations of religion, politics, and public life. Our 2013 research with devout Sunni Muslim women in Istanbul demonstrates how the big questions of post-secularism and the problem of pluralism are posed and navigated within the quotidian geographies of homes, neighborhoods, and city spaces. Women grapple with the demands of a pluralistic public sphere on their own terms and in ways that traverse and call into question the distinction between public and private spaces. While mutual respect mediates relations with diverse others, women often find themselves up against the limits of respect, both in their intimate relations with Alevi friends and neighbors, and in the anonymous spaces of the city where they sometimes find themselves subject to secular hostility. The gendered moral order of public space that positions devout headscarf-wearing women in a particular way within diverse city spaces where others may be consuming alcohol or wearing revealing clothing further complicates the problem of pluralism in the city. We conclude that one does not perhaps arrive at post-secularism so much as struggle with its demands.

It was investigated to study the feasibility of second-generation bioethanol production using, for the first time, enzymatic hydrolysis pretreatment. Argan pulp was subjected to an industrial grinding process before enzymatic hydrolysis using Viscozyme L and Celluclast 1.5 L, followed by fermentation of the resulting sugar solution by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The argan pulp, as a biomass rich on carbohydrates, presented high saccharification yields (up to 91% and 88%) and an optimal ethanol bioconversion of 44.82% and 47.16% using 30 FBGU/g and 30 U/g of Viscozyme L and Celluclast 1.5 L, respectively, at 10%w/v of argan biomass.

Alkaline treatment was applied to alfa fibers to remove the resin from the steams. X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscope and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy have been performed to ensure the undesirable substances have been removed. The sound absorbing properties have been investigated by the two-microphone impedance tubes of type 4206 B&K test. The recorded data were compared and analysed, especially in medium and high frequencies. The maximum value of the sound absorption coefficient corresponding to spruce and beech wood fibers based composites are 0.98 at 2048–2288 Hz and 0.98 at frequency range respectively. The size of the air gaps thickness and of the additional woven flax shell layer has some significant effects especially for the low frequencies. The results obviously show that the use of the biocomposites based on alfa fibers and wood fibers, for sound absorption applications, represents a smart choice and could be used as an alternative way to conventional materials based on synthetic fibers used for sound absorbing panels.

Irradiation at 365 nm carried out at usual concentrations (10-2-10-3 M) resulted in a regioselective dimerization involving the 3,4 double bonds. Extreme dilution (c I 5 x M) was necessary to observe the intramolecular photoaddition, which produces exclusively the 3,4-trans-syn adduct. These results are compared to those obtained previously with similar heterodimers that lead exclusively to the 3,4-cis-anti thymine or thymidine-psoralen adduct on exposure to near UV light.
