The visionbased pick-and-place robot has been developed as part of a smart flexible manufacturing system for unloading work-pieces for drilling operations at a drilling workstation from an automatic guided vehicle designed to transport the work-pieces in the manufacturing workcell. Work-pieces with three different shapes and five different colors are scattered on the work-plane of the robot and manipulated based on the shape and color specification by the user through a graphical user interface. The number of corners and the hue, saturation, and value of the colors are used for shape and color recognition respectively in this work. Due to the distinct nature of the feature vectors for the fifteen work-piece classes, all work-pieces were successfully classified using minimum distance classification during repeated experimentations with work-pieces scattered randomly on the work-plane.

Scientific and technological tools are now slowly used to contribute towards sustainable development. In this paper, after discussing the current state of Fiji’s scrap metal industry, the casting method which is currently used is discussed. To accommodate the recycling of light weight and low volume scrap aluminum, the application of the powder metallurgy process is proposed. Its methodology is discussed as an alternative to the conventional casting process given the local setting. Results in the latter sections show that low quantities of aluminum can be easily melted and processed for various applications. Waste reduction and recycling at source and higher flexibility for production are few of the advantages of the powder metallurgy process. The properties of the recycled parts make them competitive w...

In this study, five important process parameters such as layer thickness, part orientation, raster angle, raster width, and air gap have been considered to study their effects on tensile strength of test specimen, using design of experiment (DOE). Using group method of data handling (GMDH), mathematical models relating the response with the process parameters have been developed. Using differential evolution (DE), optimal process parameters have been found to achieve good strength simultaneously for the response. The optimization of the mathematical model realized results in maximized tensile strength. Consequently, the additive manufacturing part produced is improved by optimizing the process ...

Data Mining (DM) is one such relativel y recently technology that has emerged that is employed in inferring useful knowledge that can be put to used from a vast amount of data. This paper proposes a new design methodology which is a hybrid of differential evolution (DE) and Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) for self-organizing data mining. The new hybrid implementation is applied to the data mining activity of prediction of soil moisture , which is an aspect of hydrology. Experimental res ults indicate that the proposed approach is useful for d ata mining technique for forecasting hydrological d ata.

Data Mining (DM) is one such technology that is employed in inferring useful knowledge that can be put to use from a vast amount of data. This paper presents the data mining activity that was employed in weather data prediction or forecasting. The self-organizing data mining approach employed is the enhanced Group Method of Data Handling (e-GMDH). The weather data used for the DM research include daily temperature, daily pressure and monthly rainfall. Experimental results indicate that the proposed approach is useful for data mining technique for forecasting weather data.

The hybrid group method for data handling (hybrid GMDH) network was constructed for realizing predictive models for the machining of aluminum alloy, and differential evolution was selected for the optimization of burr formation problem resulting in finding optimal parameter for minimizing burr formation. Burr type was included as a parameter resulting in a classification scheme in which the burr type becomes the group label and it is therefore possible in the future to classify a machining process into any of these burr types. The resulting hybrid GMDH output was in agreement with experimental results, thereby validating the proposed scheme for modeling and prediction of burr formation in milling operations.

This study presents a mathematical model for correlating the interactions of some DC motor control parameters such as duty cycle, terminal voltage, frequency and load on some responses such as output current, voltage and speed by means of response surface methodology. For this exercise, a fivelevel full factorial design was chosen for experimentation using a peripheral interface controller (PIC)based universal pulse width modulation (PWM) H-Bridge motor controller built in-house. The significance of the mathematical model developed was ascertained using regression analysis method. The results obtained show that the mathematical models are useful not only for predicting optimum DC motor parameters for achieving the desired quality but for speed and position optimization. Using the optimal combination of these parameters is useful in minimizing the power consumption and realization of the optimal speed and invariably position control of DC motor operations.

Since its introduction, inductive modeling has been developed and applied to complex systems in areas like prediction, modeling, clusterization, system identification, as well as data mining and knowledge extraction technologies, to several fields including social science, science, engineering, and medicine. This book makes error-free codes available to end-users so that these codes can be used to understand the implementation of GMDH, and then create opportunities to further develop the variants of GMDH algorithms. C-language has been chosen because it is a basic language commonly taught in the first year in computer programming courses in most universities and colleges, and the compiled versions could be used for more meaningful practical applications where security is necessary.

The article presents an experimental investigation of the influence of processing parameters on clad angle in laser cladding by powder (LCP). The clad angle is determined from the mathematical expression relating to the clad height and clad width. The cladding angle model was developed in terms of laser power, scanning speed, and powder mass flow rate by means of response surface methodology. A first-order equation covering a narrow range of the variables and a second-order equation covering a wide range of the variables are presented. An optimization technique, Scatter Search, is used to determine optimal processing parameters. The adequacy of the predictive model was tested by analysis of variance and found to be adequate. r
