Particle composite materials consist of particles held together by a matrix. In this study, an epoxy resin matrix was used with Polymesoda erosa clam shell nanopowder filler. Nano-sized fillers have many advantages over macro-sized ones. The nano-sized particles will have a high surface area, thereby increasing the mechanical strength of the material. The powdered nanoparticles produced will be analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Based on the results of SEM and TEM, the nanopowder of clamshell has a size below 100 nm. The FTIR results of the powdered shellfish showed the presence of carbonate bonds C-O, C=O,...

Silica is made synthetically from sodium silicate. In this study, volcanic ash can be used as silica, which is silica can be applied in the manufacture of composite membranes as fillers because it can increase the conductivity of composite membranes. The method used for making silica gel was extraction method and composite membrane made using phase inversion method with the composition of chitosan and silica used are 2 grams of chitosan and variations of fillers 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 grams of silica, and the stirring time is 8,12 and 16 hours. The characteristics and analysis carried out in this study were FTIR and SEM. Based on the results of the study, the best membrane conditions were obtained from composite membrane analysis with a tensile strength of 34,118 Mpa. In the Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis, the lowest composite membrane has a dense and homogeneous pore, while the highest composite membrane has a hollow pore and has been homogeneous.

Palm fruit fiber itself contains cellulose and the source is abundantly available in natural resources. The aim of this study was to manufacture nanocrystalline cellulose from palm fruit fiber waste. Nanocrystalline cellulose was prepared by using acid hydrolysis with sulfuric acid as hydrolysis agent. In this research, various acid concentrations were applied viz. 50, 55, 60, and 65%. The results showed that NCC with 50% sulfuric acid concentration hydrolysis successfully obtained highest crystallinity index of 79.15% and yield of 36.4% with 60% sulfuric acid concentration. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) of nanocrystalline cellulose showed appearances of authentic functional groups which indicated cellulose presence in certain wavenumber. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) results of nanocrystalline cellulose has average diameter of 50-500 nm.

In this research, nanofibers cellulose was produced from oil palm mesocarp fibers by the chemical-ultrasonic process. The cellulose obtained will be hydrolyzed using 5% HCl and 5% H2SO4 under the effect of 20 kHz ultrasonic waves for 90 minutes. The nanofiber cellulose produced will be tested for characteristics as well Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Particle Size Analyzer (PSA). Based on the PSA results, nanofibers cellulose obtained had an average size of 17.88 nm. This is also supported by the morphological results in SEM and TEM which show that cellulose nanofiber particles are visible, the fibers are formed and FTIR results show cellulose functional groups are formed.

In this study, composite membranes were made using phase inversion method with the composition of chitosan and silica used were 2 g of chitosan and variations in dosage of fillers 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 g of silica, while the stirring time was 8, 12 and 16 h. Based on the results , the best membrane conditions were obtained from composite membrane analysis with the best conditions of composite membranes at water absorption is 44.58 %. From the results of FTIR analysis, indicated the presence of OH bonds and Si-O-Si bonds on composite membranes caused by silica gel characteristics of composite membranes also supported by EDX analysis showed composite membrane contained carbon 55.17 %, oxygen 20.36 % and silicon 10.42 %.

Coconut shell can be used to produce activated carbon. In this study, activated carbon was prepared from coconut shell by chemical activation using microwave radiation. 5 grams of coconut shell was impregnated using zinc chloride (ZnCl2) solution at 50 ml to concentration zinc chloride (ZnCl2) 1:0,5; 1:1; 1:2 for 24 hours at room temperature. Filtered coconut shell was pyrolyzed in microwave (teknowell) at 600 watt, 800 watt and 1000 watt for 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 minutes. Best result was obtained based on the iodine number for microwave power of 800 watt, pyrolysis time of 15 minutes, ZnCl2 of concentration 1:1 and yield of 88,2% at iodine number of 666,225 mg/g. Carbonyl group (C=O) was showed in Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) characterization which is indicated the active substance of carbon. After pyrolysis process, the alkuna group (C≡C) was appeared. It’s showed the increm...
