Pak Rajeg, now in his early 60's, grew up and was educated under the Dutch regime, lived through the Japanese occupation, participated actively in the independence movement, and subsequently has lived through the rapid and deep changes brought on as Bali experiences modernization. And yet, for all the changes that have come to pass in his lifetime, Pak Rajeg lives a life in the traditional performing arts of his culture that is well-founded and (it would seem) secure, a life moreover that is integral with the main fabric of the society in which he lives.Pak Rajeg is a professional dalang. He and his four musicians and two assistants form a small troupe that has its base of operations in his houseyard. From there they go forth to perform, usually in the nearby vicinity.

Active vocabulary is of greater value for communicative competence and of more interest to language testers, but is harder to adequately assess than passive vocabulary. In the present study, the timed essays of writers from China, Korea, and Japan were assessed for their active vocabulary, operationalized as lexical diversity, using three popular metrics for such assessment. These measures were correlated with each writer’s score on a test of passive vocabulary, the VST, or vocabulary size test. Regression analysis was conducted for all three metrics as well. Across all lexical diversity metrics and language backgrounds, the correlation with VST score was low, suggesting that there is little direct connection between a writer’s passive vocabulary and their active voc...

In order to provide teachers and researchers with useful knowledge, new, more accurate metrics must be developed to aid in these assessments. One common aspect of such assessments is lexical diversity, or the displayed range of diversity in vocabulary. The vocd program and the metric it develops, VOCD-D, have become popular options for researchers attempting to assess lexical diversity. However, researchers have argued that this metric is in fact a complex approximation of a more direct and less variable measure derived from probability sampling, known as HD-D. Using a data set of essays written by Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and native English-speakers drawn from the International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English, this research investigates that approximation by comparing correlations across L1 and L2 writers. In all cases, the correlations between HD-D and VOCD-D are very high, suggesting that the similarity between these metrics is indeed a product of their statistical mechanisms.
