Two of these compounds, the Z,Eand E,E-isomers were identical to two naturally occuring homofarnesene components of the trail pheromone of the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta. The trail pheromone of the fire ant, Solenopels invicta Buren, was shown in 1959 to be produced in the Dufour's gland and released through the sting apparatus.' The molecular weight of one of the pheromone components was deduced from gas chromatographic dakx2 However, it was not until 1981 that partial

The recruitment subcategory of the S. invicta trail pheromone was shown to be composed of a mixture of the orientation pheromone, (Z, E)-ct-farnesene and an unidentified homosesquiterpene consisting of three rings and one double bond (C-1). C-1 is present in worker Dufour's glands at only 75 pg per worker equivalent. This is the first report that demonstrates that different exocrine products from the same gland control different subcategories of behavior related to mass recruitment.

Faiths generally advocate welcoming the stranger, and there are many organisations (and individuals) inspired by their faith or religion to assist people in need, and many faith leaders and communities who act locally to provide protection and aid. Yet it is easier to measure the activities inspired by faith than to measure the difference that having that faith makes, and secularly inspired standards for such activities can appear to be in tension with the faith inspiration. This issue of FMR includes 36 articles relating to the feature theme ‘Faith’, plus seven general articles – looking at the 40th anniversary of the OAU Convention, work and refugee integration in Sweden, Kashmiri Pandits in India, violence in Central America, displacement in Mexico, and the status of refugee integration in Uganda.

They have novel dineolignan or sesquineolignan type structures. Although toxic, manassantin A showed potential neuroleptic activity.

One of these, named saucernetin (3), was found to be a new member of the 2,5-diaryl-3,4-dimethyltetrahydrofuranoid type neolignans with a 2,3-cis/3,4-trans/4,5cis stereochemistry. The remaining three compounds were identified as the known neolignans, austrobailignan-5 (l), veraguensin (2) and guaiacin (9).

IAM phases consist of monolayers of amphiphilic membrane lipid molecules covalently bonded to a rigid silica particle. These monolayers of lipids have proved remarkably effective for the chromatography of biomolecules. Several cytochrome P450 isozymes, an extremely important family of hydrophobic membrane proteins with a labile heme catalytic center, have been partially purified in functional conformations from rat liver, kidney, and adrenal microsomes on IAM supports. Functionality of purified P450 and P450 reductase has been demonstrated by optical difference spectroscopy, by carbon monoxide binding, and by reconstitution of enzymatic activity in vitro. Other membrane proteins, including rat liver plasma membrane NADH oxidase and ferricyanide oxidoreductase have also been partially purified by IAM HPLC. The methods for purification of these proteins are described.
