Fouzia Mannan , Professor, Department of Sociology, and Dean, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, East West University, Dhaka. She has Ph.D in Sociology in 2002 with concentration in Gender and Development from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India. She has completed her masters and bachelor degree in Sociology from Dhaka University in 1989 and 1987. She was a faculty member of the Department of Women and Gender Studies, University of Dhaka since January 2005 to 2010 and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Development Studies (ISS), The Hague, The Netherlands in 2009. She started her carrier with the Bangladesh Institute for Development Studies (BIDS) and has researched and published on gender, poverty, water and sanitation, violence against women, social protection and women’s empowerment.

This paper attempts to focus on the dynamics of the family and social relationship of women throu... more This paper attempts to focus on the dynamics of the family and social relationship of women through the prism of NGO activities in Bangladesh. It examines the involvement of women in NGO activities and its impact on the dynamics of the household and social relationships, particularly of women, in the light of field data from Bangladesh. Gradual demonstration of the effects of success stories in society acted as the final contributing factor in generating mass acceptance of NGOs in Bangladesh. As a result, people's attitude toward and trust in NGOs have changed significantly, allowing women to participate in the public domain enhancing their economic and social situation simultaneously. Nevertheless, women's movement and activities continue to be restricted by both male members of the household as well as society. Likewise, the research conducted, in this case, was qualitative in nature and samples were taken from members of selected NGOs in Bangladesh; 20 case studies were done on the basis of in-depth interviews and participant observation. It was concluded that two major factors can propel the breaking of the chain of societal oppression of women in Bangladesh: internal poverty and length of NGO membership.

The level of self-esteem among the female RMG workers is very low. They are also subjected to discriminatory behavior by male co-workers and often get less than minimum wages. In addition, they have limited scope to develop their skill and career. But improving productivity and quality of life depends on workplace benefits and human capital development. The objective of this research is to find out the correlation between female workforce empowerment and factory output. Questionnaire survey has conducted to collect the data from two garment factories: Tuba Garments Ltd (low standard factory) and Remi Holdings Ltd (high standard factory). This rapid population growth is largely facilitated by mass rural-to-urban migration. The speed of urbanization and the enormous numbers involved make it one of the major development challenges of the 21st century (World Bank & Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies, 1998). Neither public nor private facilities can meet the basic human needs (food, water, shelter, sanitation, and a safe environment) of slum dwellers, most of whom also lack livelihood security. There are huge gaps between these organizations as these have differential gender-sensitive policies or even lack proper understanding of gender. Without having a gender-sensitive leadership within organizations, sanitation issues continue to have a male-dominated bias. Given the patriarchal organizational culture and mindset in Bangladesh, serious rethinking is needed to bring about a gender-sensitive sanitation policy. This article aims to investigate gender issues in sanitation through qualitative analysis of select sanitation and water-implementing organizations in Dhaka and explore how they understand, interpret and practice ‘gender’.
