This study investigated the possible influence of the allomorphs [t, d, ɪd] in the intelligibilit... more This study investigated the possible influence of the allomorphs [t, d, ɪd] in the intelligibility of 48 verbs ending in -ed, half in the first and half in the second intelligibility test, which were produced by eight speakers from four different L1 backgrounds (e.g., BP, Spanish, German, English) and orthographically transcribed by 14 Brazilian listeners in two intelligibility tests within a four-month interval. Results of the first intelligibility test indicated that verbs ending in the allomorph [t] were more intelligible than verbs ending in the allomorph [ɪd], which in turn were more intelligible than verbs ending in the allomorph [d]. However, results for the second intelligibility test did not follow the same tendency and indicated that the intelligibility of verbs ending in the allomorphs [t, ɪd] were very similar whereas the results for the intelligibility of verbs with the allomorph [d] increased since it had large room for improvement from the first to the second test. This study investigated the intelligibility of regular verbs in the simple past tense for 14 Braz... more This study investigated the intelligibility of regular verbs in the simple past tense for 14 Brazilian listeners who had to orthographically transcribe the sentences in which the verbs were inserted in the two intelligibility tests administered in a four month interval. The target verbs were produced by eight talkers, two native speakers of BP, two of Spanish, two of German and two of English who read aloud and audio-recorded 96 sentences containing one verb in the simple past tense in each of them and including 72 sentences with regular verbs and 24 sentences with irregular verbs, which were the distractors in this study. Literature shows that learners tend to use vowel epenthesis or -ed omission to produce these verbs. The present study investigated the production of English verbs ending in -ed by two speakers of Brazilian Portuguese, two of Spanish, two of German and two of English. Each participant individually audio-recorded 96 sentences with one verb in each of them, including 72 verbs ending in -ed and 24 irregular verbs, distractors in this study. The eight participants produced a total of 576 verbs with 25.52% of non-target productions, suggesting that these results were affected by participants’ proficiency, which seemed to be higher than the proficiency of participants from previous studies on verbs ending in -ed. This study investigated Brazilian learners of English perceptions about their production in a dig... more This study investigated Brazilian learners of English perceptions about their production in a digital storytelling task cycle. Participants were 14 learners of English from an undergraduate program in Brazil. Data from the present study were obtained from participants' answers to the four questionnaires presented to them along the digital storytelling task cycle. After that, their answers were grouped and analyzed in order to have a broad view on their perceptions regarding oral production in the digital storytelling task cycle. The present study found that participants were concerned about their oral production as a whole, that they became more engaged and critical regarding the language learning process and aware of it with the use of digital storytelling. It also found that the teacher should be prepared to use technology and tasks in class and stimulate their students to use them so that language learning may be improved from its use.

This study investigated the intelligibility of English verbs in the simple past inserted in sente... more This study investigated the intelligibility of English verbs in the simple past inserted in sentences. The verbs were produced by two adult native speakers of English and six adult nonnative speakers, and they were transcribedby 13 adult Brazilian listeners. Results indicated that the intelligibility rate of regular verbs was similar to the irregular ones, and that the intelligibility of verbs produced by BP talkers was similar to the Spanish talkers. The intelligibility rate of German talkers, on the other hand, was lower than the intelligibility of BP and Spanish talkers but higher than the intelligibility of verbs produced by native speakers.

This study investigated the influence of sonority on the production of vowel epenthesis in verbs ... more This study investigated the influence of sonority on the production of vowel epenthesis in verbs ending in-ed by Brazilian learners of English. Participants were twenty-six upper-intermediate Brazilian EFL learners who read and audio-recorded ten paragraphs containing 91 verbs ending in-ed. The results demonstrated that sonority influenced mispronunciations since the least sonorous obstruents preceding-ed induced more vowel epenthesis than the more sonorous sonorants, which in turn induced more epenthesis than vowels in the same position. The results also demonstrated that within the class of obstruents, affricates preceding-ed induced more epenthesis than stops, which induced more epenthesis than fricatives, and that, within the class of sonorants, nasals induced more epenthesis than liquids. These results suggest that markedness in terms of sonority affects the production of vowel epenthesis in words ending in-ed.

RESUMO: O presente estudo investigou a inteligibilidade de verbos regulares no passado produzidos por oito falantes do inglês, cuja língua materna (L1) era inglês, alemão, espanhol ou português brasileiro. Quatorze brasileiros participaram como ouvintes e transcreveram ortograficamente as sentenças produzidas pelos falantes em dois testes de inteligibilidade. A análise acústica das produções revelou outros tipos de pronúncia diferentes das formas-alvo, mas todas as produções foram mantidas nos testes de inteligibilidade a fim de refletir a variabilidade do insumo linguístico. As transcrições ortográficas foram analisadas e classificadas como inteligíveis (quando as transcrições corresponderam à forma produzida pelo falante), outras formas verbais (quando as transcrições corresponderam ao verbo produzido, mas em um tempo ou forma diferente) e falhas na comunicação (quando as transcrições não corresponderam ao verbo alvo ou quando não houve a transcrição do verbo ou a sentença completa não foi transcrita). Os resultados revelam que o número de verbos inteligíveis aumentou do primeiro para o segundo teste de inteligibilidade. O número de outras formas verbais diminuiu e o número de falhas na comunicação permaneceu semelhante nos dois testes. Os resultados indicam que a L1 dos participantes, a falta de familiaridade dos ouvintes com o sotaque dos falantes e sua pronúncia do inglês, bem como as condições de teste possivelmente influenciaram a inteligibilidade dos verbos terminados em-ed.
