It is crucial to education as it determines the quality of educational outcomes of school students. It is a collection of values, standards and norms that every individual regarded as a professional should consider and it is a status actively achieved through the efforts of a group of employees, not their inherited character or traits. Teachers as role models are expected to stick totally to the professional code of ethics to ensure that an honest, fair and quality education is given to every student across the board. A teacher needs to demonstrate professional and ethical standards like integrity, competence, accountability in the classroom setting and their conduct with the members of staff and parents. All these hallmarks are employed to depict the mentality or practices of an individual professional in any discipline, but in the other way round they are usually observed as portraying an individual's competence, integrity, knowledge based on qualifications. The questions raised so far, in this context, reveal that: 1. do teachers comply with the codes of conduct that guide the profession? 2. Do school teachers often observe the ethical standards that guide the teaching profession? In the light of this, the study interrogates the concept of professionalism, ethics of the teaching profession, professionalism and ethical standards as well as ethical standards and school teachers. The study concludes and recommends that each of the globally-patterned hallmarks analysed in this paper should be put into practice to improve the quality and respectability of the teaching profession.

Previous studies on teachers' task performance had focused on job satisfaction, teacher workload, organisational and demographic factors, and leadership style, with no attention on the influence of government support services (welfare services, motivational strategies and career advancement programmes) on teachers' task performance in Oyo State public secondary schools. Two research questions were raised and five hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study, while the multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select the samples. The sample for the study comprised of 78 principals and 1,189 teachers selected from secondary schools in the study area through a multistage sampling procedure involving proportional to size technique, simple random sampling technique and total enumeration technique. The data obtained were analysed using frequency counts, simple percentage, mean, standard deviation and Multiple Regression. The finding equally showed that the combination of all the independent variables also allowed reliable prediction of teachers' task performance F(3,1150) =11.404, p< 0.05). The study recommended among others that government should improve the level of secondary school teachers' motivation by increasing their salary so as to make them perform better on their jobs.
