On the one hand it focuses on the Eucharist, and on the other hand on the Church’s role in its contemporary society, crossed by both the struggles between the Papacy and the Empire, and between the Empire and the Communes. Indeed, the Abbey stood out for its support to Padua’s Commune, as well as for its loyalty to the Papacy rather than to the schismatic popes appointed by the Emperor, so as to gain special privileges.
Wide space is also given to the themes of Time and Work, consequences of Adam’s sin, which are represented by the Zodiac Signs, the Months and, maybe, the Seasons, depicted in the form of a hunting allegory, a rather unusual solution at the time and, instead, very popular in the Roman times. The choice of these subjects determines a significant presence of the natural world, which also permeates the allegorical representation of the Eucharist situated on the lunette.

Giustina abbey in Padua stands out among the contemporary
artworks because, even withina rather standardized
production asthat of the fifteenth century choirs of the Po
area, presents a relevant iconographic specificity, dictated
by the peculiar spirituality of the Congregation of Santa
Giustina, founded by abbot Ludovico Barbo in 1419. In fact
the choir, through symbolic images and texts included
between the figures, can be readas an instrument for
monastic meditation, in the context of devotio moderna. In
support of the iconological reading, together with Ludovico
Barbo’s Modus orandi et meditandi, the inventory of the
monastery library is an essential source, meaning fulsign of
the spirituality pursued in S. Giustina, including Sacred
Scriptures, patristics and medieval devotional books,
especially the Imitation of Christ.
