Elizabeth Turrell's work features in this prestigious exhibition that explores how contemporary craftspeople respond to ideas about slowing down how they work, what they produce and the importance of contributing to a more sustainable society. The Slow Movement, to which the Slow Food movement is connected, began as a reaction to our fast-paced consumer culture. It calls for more local production, valuing where things come from, and creating communities and a sense of belonging through being part of a shared activity. We think that the crafts have always done this. In this exhibition you can see how makers from different countries show in their work and making processes, the value of taking time. Creative and experimental surfaces in enamel using non-traditional approaches to glass on metal. ... more Creative and experimental surfaces in enamel using non-traditional approaches to glass on metal. Traditional enamel is associated with preciousness, sumptuous colour and reflected light. However, by disassociating enamel from the glassy, decorative and perfect surface it is possible to re-interpret and re-evaluate the enamel surface for contemporary makers. Today, we use pre-packed "convenience" enamels but by understanding the raw materials of our craft, all of which come from the earth's crust, it becomes possible to develop a range of surfaces that are complementary to traditional enamelling. It is possible to achieve creative and expressive enamel surfaces using the basic vocabulary of mark-making common to visual artists.

Curated by Alex McErlain who first explored this theme in 2007 with an exhibition called 'Firing Thoughts' shown at Manchester School of Art - a ceramics focused show, Drawing Inspirations looks at the broader field of practice and examines the myriad approaches that constitute the meaning of drawing to the artist and how their work is conceived and developed. Drawing as a conceptual tool for thinking and creative development also acts as a means of translation and interpretation in material substance. Drawing is viewed as a foundational additive or reductive process to work with material
