Springer, New York, 2013;Salas et al, J Hum Factors Ergonom Soc 48(2): 392–412, 2006). The Covid-19 crisis has affected patient safety that of clinical teams, and healthcare organizations, leading to reflections on outstanding challenges in the use of simulation as a standard in healthcare training that should lead to a safety culture (Park et al, Manifesto for healthcare simulation practice. BMJ Simulation and Technology Enhanced Learning. Published Online First: 04 September 2020, 2020;Hardeep Singh et al, BMJ Qual Safety 30: 141–145, 2020). Simulation modalities provide answers to many different objectives, and professionals must get trained to make the best use of this powerful education tool through different modalities that make it possible to harness its strengths (Levine et al (eds), The comprehensive textbook of healthcare simulation. Springer, New York, 2013;Posner et al, Adv Simul 2: 1–5, 2017). SBE and training-based simulation will solve many existing problems in the healthcare field that were mentioned since Kohn’s publication more than 20 years ago (Kohn et al., (eds), To err is human: building safer healthcare system. National Academy Press, Washington, DC, 2000). © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

It started with a project that in the course of its development and implementation require several adjustments in programmatic terms. From its beginning, the project takes into consideration the integration of simulation and sets security at the heart of development. For this, we worked on new instruments that established how to implement the educational process, generating a model of teaching based on simulation, together with the establishment of control points that allowed the application of the model of continuous improv...

It has not only upended our lives; hundreds of thousands of lives have already been tragically lost. The global crisis has been disruptive, even a threat, to healthcare simulation, affecting all aspects of operations from education to employment. While simulationists around the world have responded to this crisis, it has also provided a stimulus for the continued evolution of simulation. We have crafted a manifesto for action, incorporating a more comprehensive understanding of healthcare simulation, beyond tool, technique or experience, to understanding it now as a professional practice. Healthcare simulation as a practice forms the foundation for the three tenets comprising the manifesto: safety, advocacy and leadership. Using these three tenets, we can powerfully shape the resilience of healthcare simulation practice for now and for the future. Our call to action for all simulationists is to adopt a commitment to comprehensive safety, to ...

It has been 20 years since the publication of To Err Is Human, and there are lessons learned, although there is still much to be done. Healthcare systems are becoming increasingly complex, putting the safety of patients at risk. In this context, there is a greater exposure of healthcare professionals to medical-legal liability issues and to becoming victims of situations that are often preventable. Nurses and medical doctors are especially exposed to these situations, since they are visible during procedures, or do so during the points of greater risk during the patient care process. This chapter will review the contribution provided by the curricular integration of simulation-based education as a tool to train technical and nontechnical issues and how this work can be done for the safety of patients through a standardized training plan, under controlled and evaluated processes. We will discuss how resources and...

The focus of the faculty development project was the creation of nine web-based courses written by nine United States authors with the assistance of eight contributing partners from seven different countries. The process is described from the view of the international participants who worked together with the US experts. The significance of the work, the process, the challenges and barriers, and the benefits and rewards of the work are described. Recommendations for working on a multisite, international collaborative project are also discussed.
