area of Montepulciano Lake ... more In the present study of applied anthropology in the wetland protected
area of Montepulciano Lake (central Italy), environmental anthropology is
used as a window to look at and to analyze the management and the decision-
making of the institutions and their relations with the local population.
The global issues of conservation are introduced and linked to those of
the local area of Montepulciano Lake. The cultural discourses are compared.
The Italian environmental policy has produced an overlap between the
existing relations humans-environment and the Western relation natureculture.
On the one hand, there is scientific theory, on the other hand there
are the needs of the local populations.
An interesting point of view of the transformation of the relationships
between human and non-human was offered by the fishermen and their
relation with the protected area.
Supported by the anthropological data, the author shows how conservation
is propelled by a sense of moral urgency. The diversity between the
image of nature imposed by scientific knowledge and the image of the lake-
environment is leading to the search for a new type of management.
Key words: Protected areas, environment, participation, perception of
nature, conservation.
