Imaging of spatial distributions of ultra-weak spontaneous photon emission (UPE) in living system... more Imaging of spatial distributions of ultra-weak spontaneous photon emission (UPE) in living systems started in the mid 1980’s in Japan. This chapter begins with a historic overview on the progression in sensitivity of the imaging technology allowing not only plants but also animal and human body parts to be imaged. Imaging was initially performed in small light-tight chambers using 2-dimensional photomultiplier tube systems. More recently, with the help of a charge-coupled device (CCD), larger body surface were imaged at some distance. A few recent examples on human body emission demonstrate specific emission patterns and suggest dynamic fluctuations within the pattern. Data further suggest slow fluctuations in emissions. The dynamic spatial UPE patterns allow to formulate novel hypotheses to research the biological energy systems underlying this fascinating light phenomenon and to evaluate the possibilities for a diagnostic perspective.

Regular use of meditation is thought to often result in a more stable homeostasis, clinically reflected in good health. However, destabilization of homeostasis, for any reason, can lead to both increased molecular excited states and radiative relaxation. It can be measured with levels of excited molecules (e.q., reactive oxygen species), reaction products (e.q., lipid peroxide) and intensity of spontaneous ultra weak photon emission (UPE) (chemiluminescence). The present study recorded spontaneous UPE at multiple anatomic locations of subjects with long-term experience in meditation and compared the same with subjects having no meditation experience. The anatomic pattern of UPE of 20 subjects practicing TM compared to 20 subjects practicing OTM and 20 control subjects with no experience in meditation was registrated. Subjects were men reported to be healthy and nonsmokers. Recordi...

However, already in 1912 a proposal for a morphogenetic radiation field, responsible for regulating biological form was proposed. The main purpose of this chapter is to discuss experimental research that studies the relationship between UPE and morphogenetic aspects, either in development, or stress induced changes followed by recovery processes. Within that context, different biological systems will be briefly described. In plant research, the emphasis is on the relationship between spontaneous UPE and development of seedlings. In the section on UPE recordings in animals, we focus the description on the relation between UPE and cancer development. In research using cell systems, the relationship between UPE and cultured tumor cells, with different degree of differentiation is discussed. This provides information ...

Although most cases are mild, older patients and those with co-morbidities are at increased risk of developing a cytokine storm, characterized by a systemic inflammatory response leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome and organ failure. The present paper focuses on the small molecule MP1032, describes its mode of action, and gives rationale why it is a promising option for the prevention/treatment of the SARS-CoV-2-induced cytokine storm. MP1032 is a phase-pure anhydrous polymorph of 5-amino-2,3-dihydro-1,4-phthalazinedione sodium salt that exhibits good stability and bioavailability. The physiological action of MP1032 is based on a multi-target mechanism including localized, self-limiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activities that were demonstrated in a model of l...

Since the discovery of pathogenic mitochondrial DNA defects in the 1980s, research advances have revealed an increasing number of common human diseases, which share an underlying pathogenesis involving mitochondrial dysfunction. A major factor in this dysfunction is reactive oxygen species (ROS), which influence the mitochondrial-nuclear crosstalk and the link with the epigenome, an influence that provides explanations for pathogenic mechanisms. Regarding these mechanisms, we should take into account that mitochondria produce the majority of ultra-weak photon emission (UPE), an aspect that is often ignored-this type of emission may serve as assay for ROS, thus providing new opportunities for a non-invasive diagnosis of mitochondrial dysfunction. In this article, we overviewed three relevant areas of mitochondria-related research over the period 1960-2020: (a) respiration and energy production, (b) respiration-related production of free radicals and other ROS species, and (c) ultra-weak photon emission in relation to ROS and stress. First, we have outlined how these research areas initially developed independently of each other-following that, our review aims to show their stepwise integration during later stages of development. It is suggested that a further stimulation of research on UPE may have the potential to enhance the progress of modern mitochondrial research and its integration in medicine.

To reach this aim, the basic understanding of aged herbal materials, including physical and chemical characters, is of great importance. Delayed luminescence (DL) technique was developed as a rapid, direct, systemic, objective and sample loss-free tool to characterize the properties of Chinese herbal materials. In this study, we measured DL values in aged Chinese herbal materials that were transported from Asia to Europe during the 20th century and stored in Naturalis Biodiversity Center and the Utrecht University museum, and compared these with modern material of the same species. Methods A hyperbolic function was used to extract four properties from the DL curves of Chinese herbal material from 1900, the 1950s and recently harvested products. Statistical tools, including the Student’s t test, O...

The study was carried out on six healthy donors (REF) and six sickle cell anemia patients by incubating RBCs in their own plasma at 37°C, during different times (0, 1, 3 and 6 hours). Furthermore, the sickle cells were incubated at the presence (tSCA) or absence (SCA) of 1 mM melatonin. We assessed incubation period and treatment effects on markers of membrane stability, hemolysis and antioxidant capacity, as well as metabolic enzymes and subproducts. We confirmed the well-known increased osmotic resistance of sickle cells. The hemolytic rate increased over time in all three groups, except in the tSCA group at 6 hours. Neither incubation nor treatment influenced AChE activity and plasma total antioxidant capacity (TAC). On the other hand, intra-erythrocyte TAC was higher in the REF after one hour of incubation. Moreover, melatonin treatment prevented NADPH cosumption and hemin formation, and it seemed to activate LDH. The protection effects of melatonin obtained indicate a promising use of melatonin as an antioxidant and alternative treatment for people with SCA.

With increased consumption, the safety, quality, and efficacy of herbal materials are becoming more relevant. The authenticity of herbal materials plays an important role in herbal quality control, and there is an urgent need to develop a simple, direct, objective, rapid, and inexpensive measurement tool for the identification of herbal materials for the purpose of quality control. Methods Delayed luminescence (DL) was used to measure authentic and counterfeit herbal materials. A hyperbolic function was used to extract four properties from the DL curves of the herbal materials. Statistical tools, including Student’s t test and Principal Component Analysis, were used to differentiate authentic and counterfeit herbal materials based on the DL properties. Results Our results showed that authentic and counterfeit herbal materials could be identified based on the DL properties as fol...

Because of the limited success of generic interventions, the focus of the disease study has shifted toward personalized strategies, particularly in the early stages of the disease. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is based on a systems view combined with personalized strategies and has improved our knowledge of personalized diagnostics. From a systems biology perspective, the understanding of personalized diagnostics can be improved to yield a biochemical basis for such strategies; for example, metabolomics can be used in combination with other system-based diagnostic methods such as ultra-weak photon emission (UPE). In this study, we investigated the feasibility of using plasma metabolomics obtained from 44 pre-T2DM subjects to stratify the following TCM-based subtypes: Qi-Yin deficiency, Qi-Yin deficiency with dampness, and Qi-Yin deficiency with stagnation. We studied the relationship between plasma metabolomics and UPE with respect to TCM-based subtyping in order to obtain biochemical information for further interpreting disease subtypes. Principal component analysis of plasma metabolites revealed differences among the TCM-based pre-T2DM subtypes. Relatively high levels of lipids (e.g., cholesterol esters and triglycerides) were important discriminators of two of the three subtypes and may be associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Plasma metabolomics data indicate that the lipid profile is an essential component captured by UPE with respect to stratifying subtypes of T2DM. The results suggest that metabolic differences exist among different TCM-based subtypes of pre-T2DM, and profiling plasma metabolites can be used to discriminate among these subtypes. Plasma metabolomics thus provides biochemical insights into system-based UPE measurements.

Although numerous studies have evaluated the efficacy of acupuncture, the gap in explanatory disease models has not been bridged so far. Developments in research of ultraweak photon emission (UPE) and organized dynamics of metabolism and its relationship with technological advances in metabolomics have created the conditions to bring the basics of the medicines of the West and East together which might open the avenue for a scientific dialogue. The paper discusses (1) the UPE in relation to Qi energy, meridians and acupuncture points in CM, (2) the biochemical explanation of photon emission of living systems in Western biomedicine, and (3) the progress in research on the large-scale organization and dynamics of the metabolic network including photon metabolism.

However, the standards of quality control and scientific standard operation protocol for processing manufacturing are largely unknown and there is a huge demand for the development of scientific tools for evaluating the quality during and after the processing. The key challenge in evidence-based medicine is to characterize the processing of herbal materials from system-based perspective. Methods: Delayed luminescence (DL) as a rapid, direct, systemic tool was used to characterize the properties of raw and processed materials of Rehmanniae radix and Ginseng radix et rhizome. Hyperbolic function was used to extract four parameters from DL curves of herbal materials. Statistical tools, including one-way analysis of variance and principal component analysis, were used to differentiate raw and processed herbal materials. Results: Our results showed DL properties were able to reliably identify raw and processed materials of Rehmanniae radix and Ginseng radix et rhizoma, respectively. In addition, the results indicated that after four cycles of processing for Rehmanniae radix, there was no much significant change in DL parameters which resembles the results obtained from chemical analyses (after five cycles) using 1 HNMR and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in previous studies. Conclusion: DL may serve as a fast, robust and sensitive tool for evaluating processing on herbs and may be used as part of a comprehensive platform for assessing the quality of herbal materials.

Function and dysfunction of neutrophils are key to physiologic defense against pathogens as well as pathologies including autoimmunity and cancer. A major mechanism through which neutrophils contribute to health and disease is oxidative burst, which involves rapid release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by a chemical reaction network catalyzed by enzymes including NADPH oxidase and myeloperoxidase (MPO). Due to the involvement of neutrophil-derived reactive oxygen species in many diseases and importance of NADPH oxidase and MPO-mediated reactions in progression and treatment of myeloid leukemia, monitoring this process and modulating it by pharmacological interventions is of great interest. In this work, we have evaluated the potential of a label-free method using ultra-weak photon emission (UPE) to monitor ROS production in neutrophil-like HL60 ...
