The prevalence of mental disorder is increasing among PCOS patients due to various physical, psychological, and social issues. Here we aimed to evaluate the mental health and associated factors among women suffering from PCOS in Bangladesh. Methods We performed an online cross-sectional survey among 409 participants with PCOS using Google Forms. We used structured questionnaires to collect socio-demographic information and lifestyle-related factors. Also, we applied patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD-7) scale, and UCLA loneliness (UCLA-3) scale for psychometric assessment of the participants. Finally, we applied several statistical tools and performed data interpretations to evaluate the prevalence of mental health disorders and associated factors among patients with PCOS in Bangladesh. Results Prevalence of loneliness, generalized anxiety dis...

Researchers consider several biological, psycho-social, and genetic factors are involved in depression. The present study aimed to investigate the serum levels of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) in MDD patients to explore its role in depression. Methods This case-control study recruited 114 MDD patients and 106 healthy controls (HCs) matched by age and gender. A specialized psychiatrist diagnosed the cases and evaluated the controls based on the diagnostic and statistical manual for mental disorders, 5th edition. We quantified serum MCP-1 levels using commercially available enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay kits. Also, we applied the Hamilton depression rating scale (Ham-D) to measure the severity of depression. Results We observed the decreased levels of serum MCP-1 in MDD patients compared to HCs. Also, we obtained a signific...

According to past knowledge, neuropsychiatric disorders, weak immune responses, fungal infections, antioxidants deficiencies, and inadequate nutrition might involve in SD. Here we evaluated serum trace elements, micronutrients, antioxidants, malondialdehyde (MDA), and immunoglobulins in SD patients. Methods: This case-control study recruited 75 SD patients and 76 age-and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs). We measured serum micronutrients using atomic absorption spectroscopic methods. Similarly, we assessed serum antioxidants applying the RP-HPLC techniques. Also, serum MDA and immunoglobulins levels were evaluated by UV-spectrophotometric and turbidimetric methods, respectively. Results: We observed higher serum levels of copper, manganese, iron, calcium, magnesium, and MDA in SD patients than HCs. Together with vitamin E, we noticed lower serum concentrations of immunoglobulin A, G, and M in SD patients than HCs. The present study detected a positive correlation between serum zinc and calcium levels (r ¼ 0.365, p ¼ 0.009) in SD patients. However, we identified a negative correlation between serum copper and calcium levels (r ¼-0.298, p ¼ 0.035). Conclusion: The present study suggests that the altered levels of micronutrients, antioxidants, MDA, and immunoglobulins are associated with the pathophysiology of SD. These changes may not be the cause but the consequences of the disease. These findings might help to understand the etiopathology and management of SD.

The study was conducted among 45 lung cancer patients and 50 age and gender-matched healthy volunteers. Flame atomic absorption spectroscopy method was employed to analyze the serum trace element concentrations, and turbidimetry method using immunoglobulin kit was used for the estimation of serum immunoglobulin levels. Results showed that the majority of the patients were literate and older married patients were smokers. Compared to the control volunteers, they had significantly (P<0.05) lower BMI. Serum concentrations of trace elements and IgG were found to be significantly (p<0.05) lower in the lung cancer patients. In the cancer patients, the concentration of zinc, copper, manganese and lead were 0.028±0.007 mg/L, 0.029±0.027 mg/L, 0.011±0.15 mg/L and 0.053±0.049 mg/L respectively, while these were 1.14±0.27 mg/L, 1.15±1.09 mg/L, 0.44±0.59 mg/L and 2.209±1.885 mg/L, respectively in the healthy controls. IgG concentration was found to be 14.96±3.92 g/L in lung cancer patients and 20.56±8.02 g/L in healthy volunteers. The concentrations of serum IgA and IgM were found to be unchanged. Correlative analysis suggested that serum lead value had a significant correlation

In Bangladesh, aspirin and clopidogrel are frequently prescribed as antithrombotics or platelet inhibitors. Studies reported the genetic polymorphisms of CYP2C19*2, CYP2C19*17, and ITGB3 cause an alteration of the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic profile of aspirin and clopidogrel. Therefore, we aimed to assess the prevalence of CYP2C19*2, CYP2C19*17, and ITGB3 polymorphisms among Bangladeshi patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) who underwent PCI. Methods: Here we assessed a total of 1,000 CVD patients (male 782 and female 218) who underwent PCI and were treated with clopidogrel and/or aspirin. We performed genotyping of patients treated with clopidogrel and aspirin by polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system PCR (T-ARMS...

But frequently found CYP2C19*2 and CYP2C19*17 polymorphisms and some variants of the ITGB3 gene cause alteration in the therapeutic effectiveness of this drug.MethodsOne thousand cardiovascular patients were recruited for each drug under study. Their blood was collected to analyze the genotype using PCR-RFLP and T-ARMS-PCR method for clopidogrel and aspirin respectively. The PCR products for clopidogrel were screened with agarose gel electrophoresis and then digested with SmaIfor CYP2C19*2 and Nsil-HF for CYP2C19*17. The digested products of clopidogrel and the ARMS-PCR product of aspirin were run on 2% AGE to analyze the polymorphisms.ResultsIn our outcome, the percentage of hetero and mutant homozygous people in CYP2C19*2 polymorphism (loss-of-function allele) was 64.1% and for CYP2C19*17 (gain-of-function all...

Higher levels of serum IL-1β and TNF-α are associated with an increased probability of major depressive disorder ABSTRACT Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a serious psychiatric disorder but there are no reliable risk assessment tools for this condition. The actual reason for affecting depression is still controversial. It is assumed that the dysregulated cytokines are produced due to the hyperactivation of the immune system in depression. We aimed to evaluate the possible alteration and the role of serum interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in MDD patients. The diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 5 th edition was used to diagnose patients and evaluation of healthy controls (HCs). The severity of depression was measured by the Hamilton depression rating scale (Ham-D). Serum IL-1β and TNF-α levels were quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Increased levels of serum IL-1β and TNF-α were observed in MDD patients compared to HCs. These higher levels of peripheral markers were positively correlated with the severity of depression. Moreover, females with higher Ham-D scores showed greater serum IL-1β and TNF-α levels compared to males. Good predictive values were detected for both serum IL-1β and TNF-α levels by receiver operating characteristic analysis. Therefore, the elevated levels of serum IL-1β and TNF-α might be used as risk assessment indicators for MDD.

A lot of researches has implied many markers for depression, but any of them fully discovered the association between the markers and depression. The present study investigated the serum levels of amino acids and non-enzymatic antioxidants in major depression, and also explained their association with depression. Methods This study examined 247 MDD patients and 248 healthy controls (HCs) matched by age and sex. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (Ham-D) was used to all the participants to measure the severity of depression. Quantification of serum amino acids, vitamin A and E were carried out using the HPLC system whereas vitamin C levels were measured by UV-spectrophotometer. All the statistical analysis was performed by SPSS statistical software (version 23.0). The independent sample t-test, the Mann-Whitney U tes...

However, the genetic basis of statin-related toxicities is largely unknown in Bangladesh. As mutations in the coenzyme Q2 (COQ2) gene are associated with a severe type of myopathy and variations in the tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α gene are related to serious inflammatory pain, in this study, we hypothesized that polymorphisms in COQ2 (rs4693075) and TNF-α (rs1799724) genes would be related to individual variation in statin intolerance. The most widespread cases of statin intolerance in Bangladesh (i.e., myopathy, myalgia, and decreased libido) were the chosen toxicities for this study. We studied 57 patients who developed different types of toxicities upon statin monotherapy and 94 matched controls who tolerated statins without any incident or complaint. In comparison with TNF-α polymorphisms, COQ2 genotypes showed significant associations with statin intolerance in patients with myopathy and decreased libido. For the mutant homozygous CC genotype, the odds ratio (OR) for myopathy was 10.10 (95% CI 2.60-39.23; p = 0.001), whereas for decreased libido, the OR was 0.18 (95% CI 0.03-0.97; p = 0.046). In conclusion, this preliminary pharmacogenetic study identifies that COQ2 gene polymorphism (rs4693075, G > C), not TNF-α gene polymorphism (rs1799724, C > T), is involved in causing statin-induced myopathy in Bangladeshi hyperlipidemic patients.

Major depressive disorder is diagnosed on the basis of patient's self-reported experiences, b... more Major depressive disorder is diagnosed on the basis of patient's self-reported experiences, behavior reported by relatives, and a mental status examination, and yet we do not have any reliable biomarker for this. Mood-regulating pathways are affected by oxidative injury to lipids and cortisol is released into the blood due to stimulation of corticotrophin receptors in the adrenal cortex. Here, we aimed to determine serum levels of malondialdehyde and cortisol in major depressive disorder patients and controls. We collected blood samples from 247 major depressive disorder patients and 248 controls. Serum levels of malondialdehyde and cortisol were measured by ultraviolet spectrophotometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit, respectively. We found malondialdehyde levels were significantly higher in patients than controls, with mean ± standard deviation at 4.49 ± 1.37 and 2.87 ± 0.82 µmol/L, respectively, < 0.001. Cortisol levels were also found significantly higher in p...

This study aimed at exploring the cause behind this inter-individual alterations in consequences of 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy by investigating the effects of DPYD*2A and MTHFR C677T polymorphisms on toxicity and response of 5-FU in Bangladeshi colorectal cancer patients. Colorectal cancer patients (n = 161) receiving 5-FU-based chemotherapy were prospectively enrolled. DPYD and MTHFR polymorphisms were assessed in peripheral leukocytes. Multivariate analyses were applied to evaluate which variables could predict chemotherapy-induced toxicity and efficacy. Multivariate analyses showed that DPYD*2A polymorphism was a predictive factor (P = 0.023) for grade 3 and grade 4 5-fluorouracil-related toxicities. Although MTHFR C677T polymorphism might act as forecasters for grade 3 or gr...
