COURSE-HIST0904B (Aspects of Literature and Literary History in Modern South Asia) Canonisation i... more COURSE-HIST0904B (Aspects of Literature and Literary History in Modern South Asia) Canonisation is a process to institutionalize a line of thought(s). Canon building process is never without aim. Literatures which are written with a common project in mind and in a similar environment often form part of the same canon. In modern South Asia the colonisers were building a canon of literature that would institutionalize their governance and the people of South Asia engaged in a nation-building process. Their literary canons were focused on the project of 'nation-building'. The opposing line of thoughts that were canonized in this period revolved around the concept of Nationalism and if 'modernity', concept of civil society, knowledge of writing history were borrowed from the west. The colonial sociology was focused on taxonomies, cartography and creation of borders, surveying population and designating people with religion, caste, language and race. The South Asian literature focused on highlighting the indigenity of modernity. They tried to forge new meanings and rediscover terms and their meaning. As a tool to take back the power and control from the colonials they started to write literatures that empowered obscenity against civility, religious spiritualism against Secularism (anti-christian polemics), femininity against the English and Christian masculinity (in terms of race). In this paper, I will focus on the literary canons that originated in Bengal and will situate them in the nation-building process. Nationalism as a term was used, historically, for the first time in reference to 18th century Europe. It was used to define ethnic ties of people to form a nation-state and their competitive feeling against other nations. Keeping in mind this definition of nationalism the British colonisers came to India to trade, competing with other colonisers to extend their rule over the market. In their attempt to extend the market the colonisers became involved in the local politics and military front and gradually, held important ranks in the Indian hierarchical system of governance. They used these ranks to internalize their British way of governance. To govern a population that did not think like 'them' was difficult and in the process they tried 'educating' the 'uncultured and history-less' people of India.

From this fountain head how two streams of nationalism, the cultural nationalism of the Bengali Literati and the Hindutva Nationalism, took shape and how colonial sociology influenced its formation has been discussed. The gendered reconstruction of identity over geographic, territorial and sacred "spaces" has been highlighted by using Bacchetta's work in this line.

Meme, as Richard Dawkins gives in The Selfish Gene, comes from the Ancient Greek word ‘mimema’- m... more Meme, as Richard Dawkins gives in The Selfish Gene, comes from the Ancient Greek word ‘mimema’- meaning something imitated (commonly related to the mutating properties of genes). In his book he gave this concept a larger scope to fit in all non-genetic behavior and cultural ideas that imitated, mutated and spread over a wide network. This paper, first, categorizes ‘what is a meme?’ and ‘what is not a meme?’ Second, I have tried to trace the role of the development in editing software (photoshop and the like) that led to the rise in popularity of ‘meme’ culture from the 2000’s. Third, in the paper, it could be observed how growth and globalization led to accommodation of local topics, like politics and sports, in the ‘meme’ contents. ‘Memes’ are generally taken as jokes. In a way to “fit in” internet users take the pain of keeping themselves more aware of the present times through News bulletins. This connects us to the last theme of the paper which is concerned about the interdependent reactionary pattern that Trump popularity achieved through twitter campaigns and led to a rise in the Internet ‘Memes’ in 2016. I would like to conclude by pointing out that Internet ‘Memes’ are a synthesized reflection version of the real world politics and culture(s), from anytime of the past and present, on the virtual world.
