Over time the aesthetic of its effects has evolved from revolutionary to retro. Although MIDI was developed at around the same time, the CVI is controllable via RS232 rather than MIDI. This paper reviews its history and applications in live and studio-based video production environments. A method is outlined for controlling the CVI that allows sequencing of control data, effect automation, and integration with a digital audio workstation. Results are presented from a system using Logic Pro X for sequencing and Processing for MIDI-serial conversion.

It establishes a technique for merging these structures and shows how the technique can increase the accuracy and reduce the computational complexity. This technique is described through the use of a practical application involving Mpeg7's controlled vocabularies, Mpeg1's id tag and two semantic web ontology languages.

First I give an overview of the human perception of music. I then examine in detail the requirements for a system that can analyse, transcribe, process, and resynthesise monaural polyphonic music. I then describe and compare the possible hardware and software platforms. After this I describe a prototype hybrid system that attempts to carry out these tasks using a method based on .. additive synthesis. Next I present results from its application to a variety of musical examples, and critically assess its pert:ormance and limitations. I then address these issues in the design of a second system based on Gabor wavelets. I conclude by summarising the research and outlining suggestions for future developments.

This analysis evaluates a drum’s free vibration after excitation. It is shown that the frequency of the (01) mode of the drum is the same on both heads, whereas the frequency of each (11) mode has a decreased dependence on that of the opposite drumhead. This allows manipulation of the ratios for the (11) modes of the batter and resonant heads with respect to the overall (01) mode. This manipulation is shown to allow a range of tunings such that the (11) mode of the batter head can be tuned to a ratio of 1.5× that of the (01) mode.

Other motivations lie in repurposing obsolescent hardware, reimplementing historical devices, or simply diverging from mainstream approaches to video. It is hypothesised that vector displays fell out of use when computers lacked the power to fully exploit them, and that this limitation no longer applies. Many audio tools are well suited to vector synthesis as both need complex timed control of multiple parameters. The wide range of creation/performance methodologies allows varying degrees of audio/video correlation. At one extreme, visuals may be independent of the audio. However, audio tools allow simultaneous synthesis in both the visual and auditory domains. Alternatively, there are many ways to derive visuals from the audio, sometimes with identical signals driving the display and loudspeakers. This talk discusses software opti...

These wavelets are mathematically simple and computationally modest, and are well suited to musical applications. This paper outlines the principles and equations behind quanta. It then gives examples of their applications in analysis and synthesis, and presents results from implementation on the PC.
